    Re-Building a T28R GT2860R?

    Hi guys,

A couple years back, my T28R was working intermittently due to the divider plate in the exhaust manifold fatiging and falling into it.

I want to take it apart and see what the damage is. The turbo spins freely with no movement, however I have seen some oil in the compressor housing which is not re-assuring. However it never smoked when on the car :s

So plan is to strip it down and replace whatever needs replacing.

Anybody done it before? any tips appreciated

You cant. If anything needs replacing you need to replace the whole CHRA which is the centre part.

I think i could. I bought a BB turbo on here which was in pieces years ago. My mate put it back together and used it for months with no issues.

you can buy rebuild kits on Ebay, i just need to figure out what i need.

T28R is a GT2560 I believe, or is now if you order one, GT2860 is GT28RS AKA Disco Potato.

I bought this rebuild kit but never got round to rebuild it, if you like to gamble i can sell you it for fair amount of money, but actually i would just send it to some company to rebuild it

Not worth it at all, £200+charges then lets say £100 to balance it. Brand new Genuine garrett CHRA is only a little more than £300, that comes with new wheels, ready to go and is known good quality rather than eBay spec.

Thanks for clearing that up. I was a bit confused. Thought the 28 denoted the fact it's a T28 turbo. Interesting.

As far as I can tell I only need the oil seal. Will know more once a strip it down.

Called Owen developments this morning and they quoted me £347 for a new CHRA. I don't really want to spend a fortune so let's see what happens. But you are right, easier to buy a core then to buy a full rebuild kit for the headache.

Garrett changed their naming convention years ago. Not that it makes any more sense than it did in the first place.

My mate who built up the last one didn't balance it and had no issues.

I would mark everything out and make sure it goes in the way it came out. If i just need to change the oil seal then i will be OK doing it this way.i think the bearings and carriers are OK as there is no play.

The only potential damage could be the exhaust turbine, but it looks OK from what i can see. Truth will be when i remove the housings and check out the core.

    That. The turbine naming makes no sense though. A GT25 is 53mm. But a GT28 is 53.9mm. A GT30 is 60mm while a GT35 is 68mm etc etc...

Get the exhaust housing off and see what has happened to the exhaust wheel as the chunk of mani divider may have
damaged the edge that you can't see when assembled, kingawa do wheels/shafts and can get the assembly balanced
someone posted on here about it can't remember were though,,ukturborebuild?
    yes found it http://www.turborebuild.co.uk/
I know it's not OE garret but I think a few are using there stuff and its lasting
I have a gt35r and looked into rebuilding it and can be done

Thanks for the tips and link bud. I am actually going to use this turbo on my MR2 Roadster, however if it turns out to be knackered beyond ecomonical repair then i will probably just buy a Kinugawa TD04 19T and use that instead

The price Owen developments quoted you is pretty decent, a few years back the CHRA was almost as expensive as a new turbo.

It doesn't really need to go anywhere for the work, you can shove a new CHRA in at home quite easily.

CHRA i can do at home, but when you change the oil seals i think you need to knock out the pin and pull out the bearing carrier. My theory is that if i mark it up before taking it apart i shouldn't have to have it balanced.
