    Track Day Tyre Clearance

Federal 595RS-R - the proper motorsport versions, not the cheapo lighter ones...

We've been offered some, but we dont have room for them all.

So, if we can re-home a few before we take them, it'll allow us to take them in, and it's an all or nothing sort of deal.

    With that explained - here's what's available:

    225/45/17 - £80+VAT
    235/40/17 - £82+VAT
    235/45/17 - £82+VAT
    245/35/18 - £90+VAT
    255/35/18 - £95+VAT
    285/30/18 - £105+VAT

Prices are per tyre, and carriage would be on top.

These are much cheaper than normal, but also probably about the same as listings for the other lesser spec tyre of the same name - which causes no end of confusion. These are the genuine motorsport version, not the cheaper ones sold by Mytyres etc.

If there's interest I'll get them in, if not they'll stay where they are

Nobody uses 225/45/18 unless you have a standard 350Z or Mazda 3 MPS!

This is the blurb on the differences:

In 2009 the RS-R was considered, and fell under the jurisdiction of the Federal Motorsport tyre department and was sold only to specialised motorsport tyre dealers. In 2011, because specialist tyre sellers were not shifting enough products globally it was removed from motorsport sales and became a UHP tyre and sold to European wholesalers. However to make the price reasonable in the very competitive market a lower specification tyre was made to be sold to the wholesale market. Tyre sales are very competitive and if mainland European wholesalers were getting a significantly lower price than the UK, then the UK would be up in arms over it and you would not see RS-R's in the UK. The reason there is such a significant difference is that the UK motorsport dealers pay more for a higher specification product. If we could get the product we do at the Euro price we would be selling at a much lower price also, that is market forces. The fact we don't is because we get the higher spec product that costs more.

And no, there is no obvious side wall marking difference. The lower spec product is lighter and if you move these tyres around all day you will know a light on when you come across it, the rubber is also a different colour.

If you look at MyTyres or any of the other discount dealers you will frequently find RS-R prices lower than the standard 595 budget option. There is absolutely nowhere near the margin in a tyre to be able to cut 20 to 30% in price unless you are buying a cheaper product in the first place.

So, if I have RS-R's shipped from Germany by MyTyres, they'll be the shit ones? If so I'd be tempted to try a pair of 245/35/18 and a pair of 255/35/18 to see if they improve as the current ones seem to die very quickly on track.

You're correct - the Mytyres ones which are cheap are the lower spec ones.

It's all so stupid the way Federal have done it though, I dont have anything to go you to show you this other than when you get them and compare them, you'll find they're different for sure.

I found this too, I know they are track orientated tyres so wear quicker but I'm lucky if I get 4k (mostly road miles) out of my rears... So quite tempted to try these too. Could you PM a price delivered on a pair of 255/35/18 please

This might be why I didn't like them then? Whatever I had went off very quickly on track. They were nowhere near as good as the R888's or DZ03G's I've used since. Could be tempted to give them another go at those prices.

That does stand to reason Blacktooth, they're quite different animals.

This is why initial reviews were great, then mixed reviews came along later.

They do both suffer with the tread joint where it's wrapped round the carcass being straight and so visible once they're a bit warn.

That's what I've found, fronts start to go which I hate as I like it pointy, then eventually the rear goes as well.

Ben, how soon do we need to place orders?

I am collecting a show of hands, no hurry.

If I can get a few spoken for I can order them - if not then we literally dont have room for this lot, so I can do them.

PM me if you're sure you'd like them within the next month, and I'll add you to the list. Any longer and they'll be in the way here for too long really.

Okay, assuming you get enough people I'll take a full set. I'll eBay the current ones.

Just wanted to jump in here and ask a question.
I need 2 new rears and have Federal RSR 595's 235/45/17 all round. The rears have scrubbed on the inside due to camber wear. Apart from that they're actually in good condition, especially when you consider they've been on there over 6 years now.

I only use the car on the road and it's pretty light driving. I very rarely push the car or drive it particularly hard but on the odd occasion I have the tyres have performed really well. Only one brown trousers moment which was due to my own stupidity.

Is there any point in me buying yours, which will probably cost a touch over £200 with all the vat and delivery etc, or should I just go for the regular ones from camskill which work out to £150 plus change. Money's tight. Running my car, and my life on a very limited budget. I know you're a business and want to sell the tyres but I'd really appreciate an honest answer.

If you plan to drive hard on track, get these.

If you mostly drive on the road, and aren't a loon on track, you'll probably be fine with the others, so you should save your pennies.

You didn't get them from me Ben, last ones you got were AD08s from me, or possibly NS2-Rs.

285s wont go on a 8.5 wheel, but I do have 18" Slipstreams on the way also
