what would you do with a gt86

So say you have a lighty front end damaged cat D toyota gt86 with some form of engine damage from been driven with no water in the rad so most likely repairable but for now very weak sickly engine.

So what do you do engine conversion, engine rebuild, turbo kit?
    Suspension, wheels, brakes?
    Body kit?
Get rid of the ice white paint?

Where do you start tons of after market parts to choose from?

Deciding what it is for would be a good start.

    Then setting a budget.

    Then looking at resale.

Impreza turbo engine. Upgrade the supporting parts like brakes and suspension. Add a set of wheels and get the body back to standard.

Whats it for and whats the age of it?

If you're doing it up to sell it on then keep an eye on budget, but if you're building a track/drift machine then do as above.

    ^Swear words! That's frighteningly quick.

I love the GT86 shape but If I had one I wouldn't be able to resist an engine swap and an OG rocket bunny kit.
Or just make it a time attack track whore that wants to bite down and eat every inch of Tarmac in front of it!
Or do a combination of both

According to those in the know forging the pistons and rods with a few upgrades here and there then adding a turbo to the stock motor is better than the impreza engines tho I have no idea if thats right. Its also means no major work mwking mounts and sorting props and allmthe other bits fromma engihe swap.

    Other options include a 996 twin turbo engine, a m157 biturbo amg engine(might be a very tight fit), a 20b rotary or a sr20det

The ET25 out of an Impreza has a good reputation.....as a handgrenade

The ET20 is a very old engine with pretty poor low end torque.

Why wouldn't you keep the GT86s engine and just slap a tubby on it ? Its not like people have tried it and failed - you can buy kits ferchrisake !

As regards sticking a V8 in there, good luck with that. Might go fast but its only going to do it in a straight line and the torque is going to lunch your drivetrain.

Why does it need 500hp? It's not a heavy car, it's just going to unruly and hard work to drive with too much power unless you go bananas on suspension and aero.

Exactly. Slapping a turbo on the existing engine will give it a proper sense of urgency without messing up the distribution, roll centres etc.

No-one complains about the handling or its ability to make progress, just a lack of urgency.

pnicholas has a standard GT86 and he's driven a mate's turbo and reckons its phenomenal.

But there's the cost of rebuilding the existing engine as well. That needs to be taken into consideration.

I'd strip it, cage it, widen it, suspension it and slap on a supercharger. Don't need 500bhp from a laggy turbo in a car that will only weigh around a 1000kg. 300bhp per ton sounds to me.

Or a complete red top sr20det with ecu for a lot lot less. Tweet one of those super cheap ebay manifolds and stick a gt2871r that is already on the shelf. Try and design some form of gearbox adaptor and keep the 6 speed box.

then stick in some bigger injectors, fuel pump, intercooler, new rad, nistune, ebc, custom exhuast and a few other bits and you have a 320-350hp gt86

wheels xxr 530 9.75s all around.
brakes wilwoods as brakets are easy to make.
suspension bc racing er series coilovers.

Body kit can wait as its going to cost silly numbers to get it painted.

I read somewhere that it needs a different oil pump for turboing, and that the engines valves and compression ratio isn't suited for turbo and super charging

CA's are super cheap !, can make 280/300 with good torque, that would be enough and sound nicer imo,
if you have the SR that will do,just not my choice,as above I don't think the OE engine is that good with boost
and Im guessing cost a few squid to reliably run boost, if it has no OE piston oil jets I doubt it can run that much boost safely

good chassis to start with and not that heavy, look nice in white as well
