    Oil cooler, baffled sump?

I'm hoping to do some track days next year in my 14 I just want some advise really on keeping oil temps down and if do go for a baffled sump or not.
I had my first taster at rockingham japfest but noticed the oil temp quickly got to 210f and that was only 20 mins of driving and if I'm honest I wasn't really pushing the car. Since then I've added driftworks rad, hsd coilovers, Poly bushes Lower arms and front tie rods with new ball joints also a full alignment which had improved the handling a hell of a lot.

So just wondering really is there any need for a baffled sump and oil cooler, and could some point me in the right direction to get good parts?

Nearly forgot I'll be doing circuits not drifting.

I plan to fit an oil cooler and baffled sump to mine. But with the cooler I'm going to be getting a thermostat controlled one because otherwise the oil might never warm up properly with normal driving. At least then when it does warm
Up nicely it'll only get cooled once you've hit a certain temp rather than constantly getting cooled!

Proline on here do a full oil cooler setup.

If you are putting it hard into corners and such then you may want a baffled sump to avoid oil starvation. Depends how hard you are going for it.

I think I'll defiantly go for a oil cooler set up, is there any good quality baffled sumps? Can only find the japspeed ones and I don't really like there stuff due to poor fitment.

Moroso do a nice sump, get them from FRSport in the states, mine came pretty quick and I think was about £280 landed.

It's a million times better than the crap Japspeed sell

Other options are the greddy (what the japspeed item is based on or the tomei which is of a completely different design.

Got a tomei welded sump, its exaclty the same as the oem one depth wise. arb will be smacking stuff before the sump (hopefully).

Heard of some issue with the cast one sbecoming porous. Also i prefer the idea if the sump was damaged, a cast one in my line of thought will more likely crack over a welded one whic will deflect before cracking

are the 4 big bolts on the bottom of the moroso item there so you can gain access to allow you to put bolts into the bottom of the engine? otherwise it only has the front and back bolts.

thermostatic sandwich plates still allow a small amount of oil to flow through them when fully closed. most folk cover the oil cooler in colder conditions to stop over cooling.

fitting a better radiator will help your oil temperatures, as the engine is already fitted with an oil/water heat exchanger.

has anyone suffered oil starvation issues on VVT SR20's ?????

For a start, 210 degF (98 degC) is not the end of the world. Most oils are happy up to 120degC, I understand.

I went for uprated radiator (Koyo) and a cheapo baffled sump, for circuit (not driftoo) use.

I think the general advice is that unless you're running stupid amounts of power, a uprated radiator should negate the need for an oil cooler. Certainly I've managed without, although only just.

They are indeed. It's also about the same depth as a standard sump

Also depends on your level of mods. Im going oil only turbo and have done away with my heat exchanger so a cooler is a must I expect.

You do not need a cooler if your oil is only getting to 98C. When it gets to 140C, thats when you should worry

like mark said most track sessions seem to be about 20-30mins and by that time you will probs be hotter than the car.

if your really worried get a better rad koyo rads seem a huge improvement not sure why.

and make sure your cars getting decent airflow in to the engine bay

That's not hot enough to be a problem. And you'll never do more than 20 minutes at a time if you're sensible. Don't worry about it.

The radiator cools the engine; the engine warms the oil. Better radiator = cooler engine = cooler oil.

Thanks for the advise like I said I was just wondering if a oil cooler or baffled sump was worth doing. I know 210f isn't a big issue its just how quickly it got there was the concern and I wasn't on track long enough to see if it got any hotter.

I'll proberly go just for a baffled sump for extra protection as I don't really wanna risk knocking out the bottom end

If you do make you get a good brand and even better if a sheet metal based rather than a cast one as even the tomei ones have led to massive engine failures
