T28R (S15 Turbo) Value... when broken

I have a T28R. The seals have gone.

Does it have any value at all left? Or is it best filed in the bin?

There are a few select people around now that can rebuild them so it's not all lost, you might be able to get a CHRA for it as well.

Turbo Bernie used to do them but I think he's got too much on and has stopped, you could msg him and see if he knows anyone else doing them.

If its just the seals that have gone, and the bearings/compressor wheel/turbine wheel are all in good shape then people like owen developments can do it too, and I daresay for not huge money. Before it'd be a case of binning it or getting a new CHRA from owens or turbo dynamics or somewhere along those lines and fitting your existing housings to that.

I have no clue how to check what condition things are in - perhaps I should just send it off - but as it's been broken I sort of think I am better off with something that's new, and has never been broken.

    Oh yeah... I hate cars.

Get it rebuilt with a GTX 60mm or 63mm wheel on the front. It will cost you about the same as a new unit but it it will be much wonderful.

Yea you can have it rebuilt with billet wheels, and a strengthened bearing cage.

Worth ringing a few places anyway, if you don't like the price you can always buy a new GTX series unit of similar size??

Thanks chaps. Ideally I'd like to avoid spending tooooo much, I have worries these GTX jobbies will be £700+? That would sting a bit

i always thought a new core was about ~£500 so never worth rebuilding.
you can buy replacement seal kits for less than £100, ive heard of people fitting them and having no trouble but ive heard of people having them smoke again after.

For bb based turbos I dont think you can just do the seals, you have to replace the core AFAIK

I'll report back how I get one, thanks chaps

There are a few people around who can rebuild the core for a fair bit less than a new CHRA.
Problem is they also offer billet wheels and such, the temptation to spend more money and make an awesome turbo is quite strong!
