My s14 sounds like a diesel

    Hi all.
The story goes that I've been rebuilding my Sr since I bought it with a massively flat top end and no power. I sussed the issue down to being a flattened cam lobe on cylinder 3 so there was little to no exhaust. None the less I drove it 100 miles and it sounded smooth as silk with no issues. Since then I have replaced both cams, followers and exhaust side tappets, flushed and cleaned the head and changed the head gasket.
Ever since then it has sounded like a diesel with bolts in the bores.
It is 100% in time on the chain. And the CAS timing is set up as best I can find by hand with no tools. I removed the chain tensioner and re set it in the thought that the chain is loose and I even removed the guide to make sure the noise wasn't the chain clashing on that but so far I've made no progress.
I guess what I'm asking really is has anyone got any other ideas to check out?

It's far, far worse than that lol. But how do you bleed tappets. I submerged mine in oil for about half hour before installing them pretty sure there was no air possibly in them

You need a very small allen key in the central hole to release the valve. Then depress a few times them till they go hard. Probably a 1.5mm AK

    A) VVT Sprocket
    B) Did you re-shim it and check the clearances?

To be honest I didn't I assumed the tappets pressured to where they need to be making the follower and cam clearance as it should be?

Really? Where is the adjustment? I am now a bit worried that I havent bled the tappets correctly but I can't see how I can manually adjust or even measure the clearances. I checked all the shims when I removed them and they were all matching and not showing any signs of abnormal wear

There are different sized shims that go under the rockers. I suggest you download the manual and give it a read

Cheers for the link buddy. Much appreciated. I see now you mean. Seeing other people that have the shims out of tolerance it seems to give different symptoms and result in misfire and failures. I have ran and driven my engine sounding like this and I have tested it high in the rev range and it's all good. I'm just terrified to keep driving it like this. And to add I have taken the cam cover off about 4 times now to check for any signs of wear after having been driven and sounding awful but nothing looks out of the ordinary

Does it sound like it all the time or just when its idles/revs in neutral?

No as I run through the rev range it disappears as it has load put through it my thought was the vct sprocket. But it must be the worst anyone has ever heard

Did you check the bottom end at all? All the metal from your flattened cam lobe has gone somewhere. What happens if you slowed raise the speed up to about 3k when stood still?

About 3 k the engine sounds perfectly normal anywhere below and it's just various speeds of metalic tapping

And I dropped the sump and pickup to clear all the carbon and metal sediment before rebuilding the head

So it made the noise before you stripped the head off to replace the cam? It could be that the previous owner had the tappets out and not bled them? I kept mine up the right way and still needed to bleed them!

Unless you mixed the shims and rockers up or had the valves lapped or replaced then nothing should have changed shim height wise.

Is number 1 & 5 cam cap in the right order on the intake cam? I have heard of them being mixed up before as they look similar, easiest way to check is to see if the intake cam is getting oil through the spray bar

I will check that. I take it you mean I should look through the oil filler cap while running to see if it is spraying?

There's a thought jon200.. I had them all out to see if they were the same, checked a few were the same size then put them back in any old order..... I may have made a terrible mistake
