Little update.
Outer sill measured up
Welded
Etchweld
Not really happy with my welds. Hence the Etchweld. Will revisit it tomorrow. But that's one side sown up and solid again

Then onto the next side.
Started with this..
One skin off
Then major surgery
Cling filmed ready for tomorrow

It's actually a little bit better this side. Although the boomerang mount will need more surgery

Makes me wish I could weld, saying that it looks a lot easier to do in a proper garage on a ramp than it does on stands.

I felt the same, so I bought a welder, watched loads of videos, joined mig-welding.co.uk. and my welds arent still great but do the job lol!
Yes it would be much easier doing it indoors full stop. But I am happy the weather is stable and not too hot.
Does yours need doing?
If it looks ok just get in there with some cavity wax!
If I did that 11 years ago when I bought the car and then at 5 year intervals, I wouldn't be in this mess now lol

On a side note.. what is this green stuff. Really gooey and sticky.

Mines already been done. I have tried welding but really didn't have the patience to keep going. Kept welding the wire to the part, preferred mig to arc welding though

Yep MIG is the way. Takes a lot of time and patience.
Different joints required different techniques too. Welding on old metal is no fun. Hence I cut out as much as I could without making the task too big.
Hopefully by next year I will have my own workshop (in my garden) I might even buy a 2 post ramp. You can them them for about 1k on ebay

That's the dream I'm in the process of buying a house so that kind of fun is a long way off...
I think you'll need to do a garage project thread

Hahaha.. we only bought this place 1.5 years ago. Bought some of my more serious kit now that I have space to keep it and work. My mrs (bless her) bought me some of it for xmas
The reason I am busting my balls is that we have building work starting next week which will take up to 2 months so want to get this done and MOT'D as I can't have it where it is now.
Plus side is I will ask the builders how much they will charge to a) cover the side (drive) so my cars stay dry. B) how much to build a garage at the back of my garden
However when I will be able to afford it is a different matter lol

Thinking about getting some of these to replace the plastic clips that to side skirt screw until which are now gone.
Look at this on eBay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/181799619948

Ok so today has been a long hard day with not alot to show for it.
Two words boomerang mount!
This is how it started.
On closer inspection I saw the layers and the top layer (thinner steel had corroded but the thicker bit inside was still solid so I skinned it
And then I welded in a new bit. Took me about 4 hrs to make it and weld it
And shot from the inside before
And after
Then onto making the outer skin. Kill me now!!!
Then realised there was a hump bit. Took me hours and hours to make it
Tomorrow trim it a little more and weld.
Then the 2 other skins. Not sure i am gonna finish tomorrow
This means it has to wait for 2 months now.
I will try my best but I want to do it properly.

Ok so again the whole day spent sorting out the boomerang mount.
All welded up
Primed
I think I was a but optimistic. Didn't get it finished. 3 more panels to go. I think to do a proper job you need to allocate a day per panel. (Fabricating and welding)
Looks like the car ain't gonna be back on the road for another 2 months

On a side note what is the size of that hole? I want to buy a bung for it. Have a feeling that's the reason it rotted out in the first place.

Anyone?

you've done loads! top work it always takes me ages to find this thread though! you should get a MOD to move it to the projects section.
I have no idea how big the hole is as my rust was so far up that panel the hole was rotted away!
your welding is looking good too. once i have dressed the welds back I just go along and fill any pinholes that are left. Are you dressing with a grinding disc or a flap wheel?
Hey Polo,
Thank you! I was in a rush to get it done before this happened
But I failed. Still only a bit to go now. All the hard parts finished.
I used a 40 grit flap disc, very good for finishing. I also used a mini dremel grinding disc to get to bits the flap couldn't
Can the mods move this to the projects section and name it accordingly please?
