The Keep Kermit (S13) Alive Thread

I got her (I know Kermit's a man frog, then again he is also a puppet) a couple of years ago from a lovely old lady who used it only for occasional Sunday drives. What a cool gran!
The first thing I had to do when I bought the car was sort a couple of fist sized holes in the boot, it was a real ghetto job as I had virtually no tools, knowledge, experience, garage or light as it turned out.
This is what she looked like when I got her

Much enjoyment had come of the car until this little sod burst dramatically after some 'spirited' driving.

Suspected blown HG. Changed all the hoses to new purple (why??) ones - thanks China! Ran it for a little while and tried to ignore the obvious but I have decided that the engine has got to come out.

Car is off the road for the foreseeable future. I just bought an engine crane off Fleabay, which is massive! And the plan is to hoist the lump - along with the gearbox - out this weekend. It is the biggest job I've performed on her and I'm a little cautious about it all but it has got to be done if I ever hope to be back on the road. Encouragement and advice mucho appreciados!!

While it is off the road, besides sorting the engine I figure it is a good time to sort all of the rusty spots(!) too. Just a wee sample: sills, footwell, frame rail - The usual suspects.

I took the engine out my red 13 and documented it in my build thread, might be worth a read. Good to see a project thread anyway.

Thanks Dastardly. I will update it with my progress tomorrow as long as I don't sleep in too long!

I'm going to lift the engine out - along with the gear box - this afternoon but I don't know where to attach the chain?? Copied this quote from the sticky. What is 'the front sling'?

"If you hang the engine from the front sling and the support bracket for the air-intake unit the whole lot should tip back nicely (otherwise you'll have great difficulty getting it out and back in - don't use the rear sling). Slides off the propshaft quite easily.

While it's in the transmission tunnel, support the gearbox with a trolley jack so it doesn't bash off the ground or the power steering pipes - therefore a 2 man job but not that hard with a crane that has a half-decent reach."

Just that and nothing else? I'll see if I can get the chain I've got through it as its a bit beefy.

I don't trust my memory so I labelled everything up and disconnected in preparation of lifting the engine out (I tried sticky labels but they just fell off my grimy oily parts). Still unsure of where I should be threading the chain through.

When looking from the front of the car therebshould be a bracket exhaust side at the front of the engine attached to the head, and on inlet side either around the mani through the runners or the inlet mani support bracket.
Pretty sure ther is a removal guide in the "useful threads" area!

Good to see you are planning a priper job i will be following this!

Thanks again, Pointz. In the past I've rushed things with the car as it was my daily but I can take my time now, with it being off the road. I really like the colour, it has grown on me a lot. Not sure what I will do when the day comes to respray. If ever (££).

Wrap it around it, and make sure you trap nothing plastic or small...

    But looks good!

I love the two tone ones, classic 90's look.

Glad to see you are keeping it alive too, where are you in Lincoln? I'm down there quite a bit as we have a site down there at Skellingthorpe.

Cheers Zeldoz, I remember reading somewhere that I need to mark how/where the drive shaft connects to the tranny or diff or am I confused?

Thanks CMR, I love it too, with luck it will be rust free(?!) and running by Spring.
I'm just outside of town in Bracebridge. If you're bored and looking for something to do I could always use a hand! what sort of site have you got in Skelly?
