    Alternatives to welding?

    Hi all

Driving in the sx earlier and noticed I could hear wind noises in the rear like an open window.

On inspection found a hole in the arch that goes up into the cabin, but it's not part of near the suspension turret.

Now I'm obviously going to repair it, I'll get a metal
Price, mould it into shape... My question is, does it Need to be welded? Or can I use metal Epcot resin that had the same strength as welding?

    What are your thoughts?

Doesn't sound structural, but I'd weld it regardless.. Much more future-proof than some resin which will probably end up brittle in years to come and crack off.

My view is you may as well do it the 'proper' way the first time.

Drill some holes and pop rivet it.

I would also weld it. Welding has been replaced by adhesive technology in a number of OEM applications on structural pieces these days, but it's very specifically controlled, applied and treated stuff. For an older car I'd say just do the weld.

Aye the resin that they use on new cars is nothing like what you can buy, just like when people started using expanding foam in their chassis rails on e36s because bmw decided to use it to reinforce e46 boot floors.

Except the stuff Billy Bob buys from home base is 10 quid a can, and the stuff bmw use is well over 100 quid a can, also requiring the use of a 500 injection system .

You could you panel adhesive/automotive epoxy glue. But I would always recommend welding unless it's a very temporary measure just because of "do it right, do it once".

Make the plate up and get someone to do it for you

If you cover it in glue and it can't be removed you may end up having to cut out a bigger section at a later date to do it properly

You know the right way to do it so do it that way

I thought it was really expensive and you have to apply it in perfect conditions and everything spotless?

The mobile welders around here only charge £25-£35 an hour and will come and give you a quote.

Have you tried sobbing all over it ?

It's a little known fact that tears can turn rust back into metal

I sob over my rusty bits all the bloody time !
