    Making F1 Noisy!

    http://planetf1.com/news/fia-confirm...-cars-noisier/

    I particularly like this part:

For 2016, all cars must have a separate exhaust wastegate tailpipe through which all and only wastegate exhaust gases must pass. This measure has been undertaken to increase the noise of the cars and will not have any significant effect on power or emissions
    Screamer Pipe!

I'm not sure if it will make a huge difference though.

The reason screamers are louder on normal road cars is because they have a silencer in the exhaust system, and the length of exhaust is more. but the F1 cars only have 1ft ish of exhaust pipe, so not sure a screamer is gonna do much? Might change the pitch slightly.

Either way i'm excited to see if it does make a big difference.

Surely it'll be venting of all the excess boost pressure and would be loud (i hope)... It'll be loud if its like a road car screamer.. But F1 will plumb it back into the exhaust which on a roadcar isn't as loud... i think.

That's true i forgot that they're gonna be boosting like 3bar of boost!

Ummm this makes no sense, surely they are running them back into the exhaust currently, where else would they be going?? lol

It says SEPERATE tail pipe so will be completely separate I imagine, cant wait!

Lol doesn't really read how i intended it too lol

I was getting at if you added an external wasegate onto a car you can plumb into back into your exhaust or just have a screamer pipe.

It's obviously louder if its just coming straight out the wastegate down a small pipe and out. But saying that as the F1 cars have tiny exhausts anyway regardless of how they do it it'll make them sound tasty!

    Miss the V10 noise!

Not really buddy, a loud screamer pipe is usually exactly that, a pipe without any silencing at all.

Think you misread what he means.

The reason road car screamers sound so loud is because the system on the car is quiet due to the length and the fact it has silencers. Therefore add a pipe thats short and no silencers it is much louder.

However, F1 cars have a short exhaust with no silencers already so a sort of screamer pipe if you like so adding a seperate screamer isnt going to make them appear much louder.

Doesn't that excess exhaust drive the MGU-H?

Yeah - maybe they'll vent it straight out the top of there or something? That might make a difference.

If noise is the aim, I'm sure they'll work it out

Ever since the new turbo era started i've been very interested in how they control the boost.

i've heard that they don't run wastegates and i've heard they run small wastegates.

my understanding of the MGU-H was that when off boost the MGU is in motor mode and spins the turbo up to boost like an electric anti lag then when on boost the MGU is in generator mode and turning what would be overboost into electric power.

what i couldn't get my head around was if there was no wastegate and the generator varied its drag load to keep the turbo's speed controlled to give the desired boost, EGT's and backpressure would increase. So i'm lead to believe there must be some form of wastegate.

The things is though, with these cars being so efficient they'll always struggle to get V8 levels of noise or even anything close.

At the moment they can run unlimited boost pressure. It normally tops at 3.5 bar due to limits of how much fuel can be burnt per minute.

So if they are going to have a waste gate I imagine e it won't be working often and will be no louder just a different tone.
