Varying whine from fuel pump - impending failure?

Sat in traffic the other day and noticed the whine from Walbro fuel pump was varying in pitch rather than the constant whine it's always been (or I assume it is as I've not noticed it changing before) - is this a sign it's on it's way out? Guess it'll be about 10 years old now.
Also, I've done the wiring mod to it, when I garage it I take the fuse out (anti-theft measure) and the wiring was warm, which I've not encountered before - will have to check the wiring hasn't got a lose connection somewhere but another sign of fuel pump failure drawing extra power?

More than likely a voltage issue, get the pump hard wired

Mine used to do it until I found my fuel filter was leaking, changed it and all was good.
