    S14 Brakes on S13

    Hi All,

You guys have proven to be pretty helpful so far so don't let me down

Is it worth putting S14 hubs and callipers etc. onto the S13.

I need a brake upgrade but can't warrant a 1.5k set up at the moment.

So is it worth it and will it make much of a difference? Or is it too much hassle for what its worth?

    Cheers

    Jack

The conversion its self isnt hard at all and yes it is worth it. I have r32 calipers on mine (same i believe as s14's)

Dont forget to uprate the master cylinder too

Yes. You dont need the brake booster from the s14 though

Depends how much you can pick up a set of calipers for really think i paid £120 posted for calipers and spacers, caliper rebuild kit about a £10er.
And the discs i used were merc ml500 discs and were about £160 i think at staff price. Then had to re-drill the discs etc

So about 320 with pads and paint for the calipers!

Ahh cool, cheers for the info

May have to wait a month or two but that sounds like a good way to go.

It's fine on stock MCB unless you have a really early one without ABS, that got a 1/16 smaller MBC.

Actual breaking force is no different to late S13 with 280x22mm discs, calliper piston areas are the same. What it gains is disc mass 280x30mm and that resists fade.

Compared to early 257x22mm discs it's like night and day.

I have converted to S14 front callipers up front and it is worth doing. Plus you just bolt the callipers straight on, just need the brake lines and bigger disc to match. But if you can afford a Z32 set up all round or something similar I'd go with that.

okay so ive got some s14 discs and s14 callipers so what else do I need to upgrade my brakes, its just the fronts at the moment.

So, brake lines? Just normal s14 ones?
    Servo?
    Anything else...?

    Cheers

Braided lines - and no they're not 14 ones you need 13 one end and 14 the other. There's a few places to buy them pre made.

    Fluid

    Pads

You have a prefacelift and the brakes are shit.

You can fit facelift disks as long as you buy a set of facelift caliper carriers. You can fit your prefacelift calipers (which are almost identical) to the carriers.

This will give you facelift brakes.

Next step up is S14 4-pot front calipers which you can run with Facelift 280x22mm disks but you are better off going with S14 280x30mm disks and redrilling them to a 4-stud pattern. For the calipers, you will need different brake hoses and possibly spacers to allow your wheels to fit over them.

After that there are loads of options...upgrading master cylinders, ABS delete, BMW disks, 5-stud hubs.....endless.

EDIT: I started writing this this morning but didn't get to post it til this afternoon...pesky work getting in the way.

    Thanks for the info.
I have got the s14 4 pot calipers and i believe the s14 280x30mm discs.
Ive already got large spacers on it as well.

If you have hard lines on the 14 calipers, you can use standard S14 braided lines to connect from the inner arch to the strut.

Most 14 calipers come without the hard lines in which case you will need "Z32 conversion hoses for an S13". The cheap ones come without anything to attach them to the struts which is an MOT fail so you will have to find a way to cable-tie them using fuel hose (which your MOT man will frown out but ultimately pass...probably).
The expensive ones (like Apex do) have a sliding clip to attach them to the strut. They're about £50 for a pair of front hoses.

What wheels are you running ? You may need spacers.

You will also need to redrill the 5-stud disks to 4-stud. You need to reuse one hole and drill the other three using a pillar drill and a template.

If the calipers didn't come with all their hardware, you will also need pins and springs and a decent set of pads. If they've not been rebuilt, you'll need a rebuild kit and quite possibly a set of ( up to 8 ) pistons

It's really not that bad. The new calipers bolt onto the existing mounting point with 2 bolts. The discs once re-drilled slip straight on. The braided lines can be bought pre made and are not hard to connect. Existing master cylinder can be used.

So long as you've bought sensibly on the condition of the calipers and they have come with the associated hardware you won't go too far wrong.

Recommendation I would make though is to trial fit one caliper (without disconnecting the existing one just cable tie it out of way) just to see if it definitely clears your wheels before committing

I dont think ill have an issue with space as its got what look like 20mm spacers on already. And the alloys are quite a deep offset. Any recomendations on braided lines that will fit. Had a quick look but not sure if im looking at the right ones or not
