    painting engine bay

before my engine goes in to the new shell i was going paint the engine bay black (its currently Red) I'm a complete novice with painting, if i was to rub back the existing paint with a scotch brite pad would this give enough key for a paint job (using cans)?

Make sure you de-grease it before rubbing down and before paint. Invest in a tin of panel-wipe.

    This. ^^^^^

Use a degreasant then wash with fairly strong car shampoo then rinse thoroughly and dry....then rub down, wash, panel wipe then paint.

Definitely give it a good keying - scotch brite is fine but make sure you do a few passes so theres no shine left whatsoever.
I recently did my bay black, from red

    to

I spent about 2-3 hours cleaning and keying it before hand and theres still a few bits that have chipped off fairly easily while refitting everything, but luckily you can hardly see them.

Depending on how clean or dirty it is a good jet wash wouldn't go a miss before you rub it down

Also believe it or not the scotch bright pads come in different grades so make sure you dont get really fine ones otherwise youll be there ages!!!

You might want to invest in a range of grades.

If it's taking you that long you're doing it wrong! If you've degreased the bay then about half an hour spent with a scotchy should be plenty to key the surface. You're not trying to get it back to bare metal or anywhere near, just enough to rough up the surface so the new paint sticks. I'm doing this exact job on mine right now. To save time I'm soaking the scotchy in panel wipe and rubbing the bay to kill 2 birds with 1 brick but my bay has been shot-blasted and just has a light coat of primer on it just now.
