    Coil over help

Just recently purchased a ps13 it came with rock hard coilovers fitted so I'm trying to find a decent sett to fit to the car I don't want to purchase any until I know what's a good choice and what's not, so I'm just after advice on what people are running and how they find them cheers

I was about to post up a similar question as im running the hks hyper d's and they are rock solid so rather than going through the hassle off changing shocks I was going to find out if I can get a softer spring for them .

What brand are on there? Have you fiddled with the adjustment yet?

What can be rock hard now can possibly be made to be compliant with a tweak

    Using what? The damper adjusters?

How are they set for pre-load?

Had car up today for a look coilovers are jic coilovers with tein top mounts no ratings on the springs front or rear, I adjusted the settings using the adjuster on top of damper turned it down from 5 to 1 made very little difference

JIC are pretty known for being hard imo.
In had a set on an old s13 i brought from a pal, they didnt have seperate collars for adding/removing preload and lowering ride height. On mine you
had to lower ride height by releasing preload. Also mine i think had seized shocks as it was almost like they had no damping what so ever. I've never driven on JIC since probably 2007 so yours may be newer better ones.

Apex limo are probably the most compliant road coilovers.

What kinda use are you intending for the car???

HSD would be your best bet IMO

Comparing my BC coilovers to a friends HSD's the HSD's are far more comfortable, but the BC handle better and have better adjustment.

Adjusting the damping actually does something where as on the HSD's we barely noticed a difference.

I have HSD Monopro's on my S13, my friend has BC's on his Levin AE111. I found the HSD's to be really good - Ride is good, they absorb bumps and vibration well but they still feel tight and precise, they don't crash or bang, and they're about 5 years old now. I had to recently relubricate them, but are now pretty much perfect again. The damper setting seems to be pretty good on them to me too? I can feel a reasonable difference. Also, they're still all free and fully adjustable after 5 years with just basic care.

The BC's on the Levin do feel good too, but they do seem more harsh and tend to feel a little more 'crashy', but they still handle well. I saw a discussion about them on Driftworks and the overall verdict seemed to be that BC's aren't quite up to the same standard as the HSD's. My friend seems to be sure that his are a bit noisy now too, even though they're only around 2 years old. Again though, they seem pretty good all round for the money.

It's worth noting that the two cars they're on are fairly different, but I still know I'd choose HSD's over BC's personally. I drive both cars often and it's just what I've noticed.

And Driftworks do finance on the HSD Monopro's

Just my 2 cents worth if it helps give you some insight!

If they're my old hsd's then they are 5/4 springs not what they would normally come with

Ahhh ok, yeah they are your old ones - still going strong though. That's a good point worth noting too then, I assumed they were the standard 7/5!

Although the BC's on the Levin are 6/4, so they're actually not far off, but may explain a little of the extra harshness of the BC's over the HSD's. Don't get me wrong, the BC's still seem like a good bit of kit.
