    Car starting issue....It won't?

    Hi,

Any light on this issues guys or things to test and try? Car is a s14a SR20DET

Cars run fine since i purchased in Feb, drove all way to Japfest and back (4-5 hour trip) no issues. Got home, parked up and went to start car 10 mins later and it won't.

Car just cranks and cranks but doesn't fire up. Only way to get it started was bump starting it! Once bump started it drove fine, turned it of and again it wouldn't start.

Tried another battery, still the same issue.

I Removed the starter motor and tested it outside of the car with a battery pack and seems to spin as it should? How powerful should it be exactly?

    Any ideas guys?

    Cheers

When you say the starter spins, it is supposed to pop out a bit too. Did it do that?

It needs to be spinning the engine at about 300 rpm. Then engine should then run on its own fuel and ignition system.

If you've already removed the starter motor to check it, that suggests you already know the starter motor was not spinning the engine.
The noises involved there would be obvious.
The starter spinning just itself will sound very different to it straining to turn the engine.

Standard SR20s are usually very reliable, so it's weird to read of one that will not start on the key, but will run after a bump start.
I can't think of a reason why the bump start worked.

Did it sound normal when you were cranking it? Might be worth checking the teeth on the flywheel, make sure they haven't rounded off by using dodgy starter. I've never heard of this happening on an S14 but now the starters off it would be easy to check.

The only thing I can think of is immobilizer fault, if bump starting it works then it must be getting fuel and ignition. Might be worth giving it a compression test.

It wont be the immobilizer if it bumps.

when it does it again, remove the plugs, disconnect the fuel pump fuse and crank for 10s.
Put the pump fuse and plugs back in again, then try.

    Might just be getting flooded.

Check the spark plugs too and see if you get any sparks. That can help to determine if the issue comes from that area (plugs, ignitor etc) or if it's something else.

Colour of plugs ^^ Done as sideways14 said, still exactly the same

Will get some compression readings later on today and update

    UPDATE: Still doesnt start

It seems to not get spark or fuel, plug removed earthed to engine and we got nothing. Done the same test using a friends CAS plugged in and spinning by hand, sparked.

So we thought oh right CAS is dead, so we fitted his working one to the car, all back together and still exact same problem....Doesnt start?

    Any ideas

If it starts with a bump you should have spark and fuel, cannot possibly start without.

if its bump starting it would make me think low compression, if thats fine then your onto ecu losing power when cranking or something along those lines

    UPDATE:

50 psi across all four on a cold compression test....???????

Surely being that low wouldn't even allow a bump start, let alone bump start then drive fine for hours with full power?
