    Lotus Elan +2 or 240Z

Going to look at a couple of cars today. Which would you go for?

    1972 Lotus Elan +2

    Or a 1972 240Z

    Or the wildcard

    Citroen DS

Not really sure myself, but I can see the Datsun being the easiest to own.

Lotus hands down .... yes the 240z will be more reliable.

but driving around the b-roads in that lotus to a country pub with a Lady by your side ... EPIC feeling !

If 2 years down the line you discover you have 2 7 year old girls that need to sit in the back of the car (it happens), then get the Citroen.

the 240z - if you want to use it as a daily

    Lotus....end of thread

But honestly mate its such an iconic car, amazing handling, amazing engine note, plus it's just kinda special? I like the z but it just doesn't compete imo

240Zs are cool... but not as cool as an Elan.

Elan. Just in the looks department the other two don't even come close.

    Elan.
Plus, if its a consideration, the Elan will appreciate in value a lot more in this country than a 240.
But what a lovely choice to have to make

Hi Rich, yeah for my Dad. Sunbeam Tiger's the only classic for me. Must admit these two came as a bit of a shock. When he phoned I asked him if he knew how small an Elan was and he said he was stood next to it at the time so that's covered. Apparantly the 240 is in concours condition and one of the best in the country. It wouldn't stay like that and would get used, but may be it makes most sense to start with the best. Never understood the whole concours thing, may aswell be a classic washing machine.

Si, out of anyone on here I thought you'd be up for the DS.

Hehe, I just don't 'get' DS's - I appreciate the design, but have no desire to own one.

The Elan's not in a small town in Warwickshire is it?

I bet he wont get any of them, he has been asking you about a car for the last 2 years!

Two years, nearer 10. Five or six years ago I was telling him to get a '70s 911 as a classic you could own for 5 years, be relatively reliable and you could always sell for what you paid for it. Obviously I never show him what they're worth now.

I worry he could get into an Elan, but never get out again.

I think being a biker for 50 years he likes the idea of a classic car, but nothing's really grabbed him, apart from the scary interest in old French rubbish.

240Z unless he likes spending lots of time fettling, fiddling and sitting at the side of the road.

240Zs will also appreciate quite a bit in the next 5 years IMO.

Sorry, did some say something about a Citroen ?

I'd choose the 240Z, to me it's a nicer looking car but that's personal opinion

I was lucky enough to take a 240Z out for a drive the other day, it was sooooo nice

Always wanted a DS as well, the Lotus not so much for me. Not a bad decision to have to make mind you, you cant really get it wrong

I don't get how people think the citroen is vile...240 or the DS. They're worth a fair bit in good nick. There are some restoration co's selling them for ~100k fully rebuilt
