    Aidan's S13 Project car

Hey guys, this is my S13 that i bought back in June 14, a little history about the car, it was first registered and owned by someone in Carlisle, then one of my friends dad got the car, i dont know when he got it, but one day he said he was out in it, parked it up and he went off to do some things and it got stolen. Somehow they got it back, not sure how, but they towed it back to his house because the thieves broke the ignition assembly so they couldn't start it (even though you can do it with a screwdriver ) so he left it in his garden for 10 years. Yes 10 years, the last tax disc ended somewhere around September 2004 and its never been driven since. That's the story he told me anyway, ive seen the car outside that garden for as long as i remember, i would've been 7 when he put it there (im 17 now) obviously i had no idea what car it was until i started learning more about cars in high school and and college, then i released what car it was, i begged my friend to ask his dad to let me buy it for a good year, obviously i was 16 then, Couldn't drive, didn't have a job till Feb 2014, and one day i get a random message off my friend asking if i wanted to buy it, so i thought why not, i paid 400 for it, abit steep i know.. anyway i towed it back to mine, only down the road and that's when i began my work on my S13 project!

Ill start off it being where i got it from, my mates garden where it sat for 10 years!

We had to dig all 4 wheels out the grass, they must've been 3-4 inches into the ground, had to get my brother to come in his car so we could pump up all the tyres aswell!

    http://s1380.photobucket.com/user/ai...jpg.html?o=137

    Finally it moved!!!

The next day it was at my house, funny story actually, my uncle towed the car back with his car, but he wouldn't let me steer the car because i was only 16 and didn't have my driving licence yet so my mum had to steer while i sat as in the passenger side, baring in mind we only have half of the windshield to look out off because its smashed on one side, so from my friends house to mine is literally half a mile, by the end of it my mum was crying because she was scared for her life, talk about being over dramatic ahaha!

The first day at my house! this was the day i looked at everything and saw how much work it was going to be!

    stupid S13 spoiler!

    Theres me aha!

This is where they robbed the car and messed up the ignition assembly.

    The smashed window!

Right First job was to rip out the alarm system on the car, i couldn't open the door without it going off, didnt know how to use it,it was a mess. Next i got started on cleaning out the interior, it was a horrible place to be in, in stunk, was filthy and everything was all old and rotting away, not got many pictures of the cleaning but i took out all the panels inside and seats, cleaned every panel, cleaned the seats, i was going to take up the carpet but i left that job, probably do it at a later date.

Nice to see another one being saved. Are You doing a full restoration or just sorting it out to have some fun in it?
Take a look at the underside, it might be in quite a shape if it was parked on the grass for 10 years.
Anyway, good luck with the project

Although it's in poor condition you still got it quite cheap I think. Good luck with the project. Nice one on saving another S13 from the scrapyard. By the way I hope your pockets are deep doing a full resto lol.

Next i wanted to get all the wheels off and look at the suspension and breaks, unluckily for me there was locking nuts on the two front wheels and i could not find the key for it anywhere so i had to start hammering a similar sized socket onto the locking nut and get the outer sliding cover peeled back enough so i can get a smaller socket and hammer it on the nut and hopefully turn it. Took me 2 hours to get both off, an hour each!

Heres all the suspension and breaks once i just took the wheels off.

    Nearside front

    Nearside rear

Dont have a pic for offside rear

    Offside front

A few other bits i did, i got a new battery for the car, at this point i didnt know if the car ran or not,all the electrics seem good apart from the passengers side window, abit of diagnosing lead me to the window switch contacts, a little clean up with a screw driver and was all working as should The engine turned over but didn't start, so was abit gutted ive had to wait a while to get it to run, so i got new spark plugs, looked on some forums and got some but they were a 16mm not a 14mm so i couldnt get a socket down there to tighten them up properly, so just had to nip it up with some pliers but still didnt start, so i pointed my finger to the fuel pump and bingo, after some wiring tests it was the fuel pump!

Right, next is i took the doors off their hinges and cleaned the panels where they bolt to because they were very dirty.

Some other cleaning that i needed to do

Took both windows out and gave them a clean, 10 years of dirt!

Took the wing mirrors off, they were stiff to fold in and out and this is what i found in them

    A good clean later

There are probably some other little bits ive done here and there but cannot really remember rn, so the next job was taking the fuel tank off the car, havent really got any pics off it really but after i took it off i started to take off all the old paint or whatever it was on the fuel tank! (sorry that they're snapchats aha)

I've decided to leave the petrol tank as is at the minute its filthy as inside, powder and rust in there, spoke to my tutor at college and he said its best to send it off to a specialist, so i could do that or get one of a breaker car..

So the next job i wanted to do was to take the dash out, clean everything behind the dash and tidy it all up!

The metal bracing bar that goes under the dash, seen better days

The difference a tin of dash cleaner does!

What its like with the newly sprayed bar, makes it look heeps better

All put back together! looks great! Before vs after

Next on the list to do was to sort out the fuel pump, i bought a Walbro 255 pump off someone on SXOC, but i didnt get the wiring for it so i had to buy that separate of ebay> my fuel cradle was caked in crap, i would've bought a new one but i cba at the time so i just thought to get mine as good as could!

    Cradle cleaned up quite nicely!

    new fuel pump gone in!

    not as caked as before

Abit of Hammerite to stop the rust

Then a lick of paint and all wired up!

    Monster can for added horespower!

    Then all wired up!

Tested the fuel pump and the engine started! )) but didnt sound too good (

Away from my car for a minute, i got a new job, less hours soo obvs less money which means i cant do as much as i used to be able to do but i have more free time soo?? but my old job shut down and i got made redundant and this was in December so i thought id treat myself to some much needed garage attention!

What my garage looked like pre Christmas 2014

    All my tools just there

    But then Santa came aha!

Finally somewhere to put my tools, a new jack and new mig welder!

Then my Grandad made me a little bench!

This is what its like now

Right soo this is where it gets ugly, at the minute im in the middle of taking the engine out of the car, got the rad out the car does not look good!

neither does the rad support look good

Taken off all the auxiliary stuff alternator, power steering and AC, cut the exhaust off because i couldnt be bothered with trying to ratchet it off when ill be getting a new exhaust anyway! you can see where ive cut it

i went under the car for the first time to properly have a look and some places its bad and some its alright
    Sills are shot

    Diff is abit rusty..

    Took the Driveshaft out aswell

well that's it for now, next update will be when i get the engine out and can check all the body work fully!

Well done with the interior, looks good. I had one of those tool boxes a few years ago. How many miles has the car done?

You can still get genuine front ends (slam panel, headlamp panels, crossmemeber and support bars) from Nissan for an s13 if that's any help to you

Good to see parts off my s13 being used to save another one looks a lot of work but your not afraid to get stuck in! Keep up the good work. Don't get on here much but I'll keep my eye on this.

Well done for saving what most would have give up on and broke for parts and weighed in,
that was a good read and the before and after pictures got a good idea of what state it was in
it don't look as bad as I thought it would, considering 10 years sat on grass
plenty of bits and good advice on here to help get it done
