A slightly cheaper option, but what about the Mazda 6 MPS?

Focus st? Nice 5 pot sound, torque whenever you want it, can do a few choice mods for more reliable power, useful hatch when you just need to Potter about, and in something like imperial blue looks much more subtle than the orange lairy lot
It's not a bad shout. Not ticking my 'special' itch though but it's a good sensible choice. Test drive required
The best she's brought to the table so far is 'as long as it's not silver or grey'. Useful when looking at mid 2000's BMW's of course....
If you go Ford look at the original Focus RS.
6 series is great for the money.
Passat R36 is a 300bhp V6 that sounds great and ticks a lot of boxes.

Passats are super comfortable, my friend had a VR6 model a few years back.
It was awesome to waft about in, but it guzzled fuel and really would have suited a diesel better.
Special enough?

Mmm red leather, like a cheap strip club.
I was going to suggest an E30 M3.
Then I saw what E30 M3s now cost. Fark.
Hmm, what about a Porsche 968?
Lol think he would need to triple his budget si.
Hence why suggesting a nice blue one with all the mod cons arry, it looks like a regular focus (as an m3 does a 3 series) but a few subtle extras unlike the halfords tastic rs in lime green.
Also with a subtle exhaust and a remap, you've got a nice deep burble with some poke to match. I didn't think I'd like them but went out in a friends a while ago and was fairly well put together imo.
I understand the special itch your talking about, but unfortunately that comes hand and hand with uncommon rarer cars, or old, either which will need work to keep on the road and probably a few mods to make as quick and refined as something more modern.
They are horrendous on fuel though for what they are
If you want a non Essex one then go for one of these

968 is a good shout! I think they're possibly above budget but should be depreciation proof.
Focus RS Mk1 I'm not keen on but I guess finding one for a test drive might change mind
The ST500 Mark - what's the difference mate?

Might be a bit of room for haggling?
I can't see the price going anywhere but up in the next few years
Had just found that one and was thinking same thing Ben!
968 Clubsport prices are starting to get silly.
If you get the normal Sport at least you get back seats and it may even appreciate, they are going for more now than a few years ago.
Cracking drive as well by all accounts, have been passenger in one, but not good interior if that sort of stuff matters.
