New car time - edit: bought a 911

    Hi

So the 330d is about to get retired and I'm thinking of potential replacements

    What I want:
    Reliable
Reasonably practical - hatch at least, estate ideally
    Comfortable / well spec'd
    A good drive

Thinking R32 Golf. Anyone any advice on these?

    Budget about 8k

    Any others to consider?

Edit: bought a Porsche instead lol

With my recent experience of Vw cars I'd so because it's a bit of a laugh when it's under warranty and you get a loaner free of charge but when your paying the bill it's becomes a nightmare.

Engine wise seems ok but clutches and electrics are a ****ing nightmare. It seems for many many years Vw have had these problems which annoys me even more.

    Not tempted by another bmw?

Did they fix the slave cylinder problems on the mk5.

Agree with Ghost about Golf faults. It seems vw have known about a variety of faults and ha e done feck all to fix them.

    No idea!

If they don't tick the reliability box then I'll move on

If you could stretch to 10K there are a few diesel XFs in the 8-10K range. Get a luxury premium spec though as the luxury is bum-basic.

    Reliable - tick
Reasonably practical - hatch at least, estate ideally - hatch tick
    Comfortable / well spec'd - tick
    A good drive - tick

Upmarket, rwd, auto, diesel - tick, tick, tick, tick

Miles is what they do best though, especially the diesel. Can get DPF issues on very low milers.

The one I linked was the first one I came to but a 7 yr old car is going to have 80K+ miles on it if its been used.

    How about this...

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classifi...01409237627212 and haggle to below 10.

No complaints nicely spec'd , really smooth( best auto box except for ferrari ect) quite cheap to run if you don't use stealer dealers.

Edit make sure you get a auto.

Almost double his original budget and its not an estate nor a hatch.

Maybe something like this might be more fitting...

Estates are cheaper there was plenty under the 10g the newer shape is much better in terms of refinement.

Still the old one looks good.

Means something to me - PITA to sell; uncertainty of purchase. On a £3k car I'd not concern myself, but something I might need to move on in 2-3 years time, I'd not take the chance.

Looks like the Jag is just a bit out of reach. Can't stretch far enough to get one that's worth having

This 4-yr-old 1 owner Saab 9-5 2.3 turbo (256bhp) Estate with low miles, leather and some toys would be well within budget at 7K

    http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classifi...01412199740355

Even if you are doing 15K miles a year, that's only about 700 quid extra a year in petrol over a diesel and...well...its not a diesel

...or if you can stretch to 9K, this would make a killer stealth wagon...

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Saab-9-3-2...n/251746017691

    2.8 V6 turbo with AWD. Nom-nom.

If 9K is too dear...this is 6.5K - same car, different colour but more miles...
