Tell us what it is about your 1.5 mile journey in the Fabia that you hate ?
Do you have to drive past a bus stop where there is a pretty young girl who sneers and looks away when she sees the Fabia coming ?
Something electric and charge it at work.
Hey! there's useful advice buried in there somewhere!
5k on short journey car seems silly - buy cheap.
As fuel doesn't matter due to the difference between 5mpg and 50mpg over 1.5 miles being negligibiblbble, buy the biggest, most stupid luxobarge you can for a couple of grand, and spend 3k on something awesome.
Or buy an MX5 for a grand.
Or buy a nice downhill bike for a few grand.
Or 2 skateboards and some reigns for your dog. And a couple of brollies.
My short journey gives very little time to hate the Fabia.
My 300 miles this weekend to Southampton, Southsea, Shanklin and home again have reminded me that I hate Fabias, this is my second one and I hated the previous one as well Yes, getting a second possibly wasn't my smartest decision, I remembered the MPG on a long trip more than I remembered the hating.
It rattles, feels cheap, is unrefined, the seats are uncomfortable, and I do not enjoy driving it, or have any liking for it other than the long run MPG. That is the only feature which redeems it in any tiny way.
Agreed.
Some thoughts...
As fuel doesn't matter due to the difference between 5mpg and 50mpg over 1.5 miles being negligibiblbble, buy the biggest, most stupid luxobarge you can for a couple of grand, and spend 3k on something awesome. - I hate fixing cars, so this isn't appealing.
Or buy an MX5 for a grand. Already have an MX5, well wife does. Just off the road for winter. No ideal to going far with dog.
Or buy a nice downhill bike for a few grand. Meh, I just dont want to bike, dont want to die, get rained on, and smell all day at work.
Or 2 skateboards and some reigns for your dog. And a couple of brollies. Great plan, but dog is blind, so isn't the best tow vehicle despite his enthusiasm
I know I am being needlessly difficult. I am annoying myself with this.
Then buy an MX5 for the commutes, and a Jag like Jonny's for the long runs
Or commute like a Boss.
I wonder if you'd actually be better off leasing something?
Doesn't matter if you kill it with a short daily commute, just use for 3 years and give it back.
I just sold my Civic and bought the Jag for this reason. Whilst the Civic wasn't a bad car in any way, it simply wasn't satisfying in any way either so I ended up constantly watching the MPG readout.
Life is too short not to enjoy driving. I put up with the Civic while I was driving 3 miles each way but I now have a 50 mile daily commute doing about half dual carriageway and half 40/50 limit stop-start congested roads.
Much happier now with a big auto RWD
My brother is selling his ST2 if youre interested ..... they are juicy but they are a lot more fun than a Golf GTI IMO

But as said bike or walk is best then something fun for the weekends...
My commute involves about a 1.5mile walk each way (plus a 45min train journey) and its fine
Edit: Just read your wife doesn't like big cars, so scrap that idea!

It seems a lot of people are missing the point here. I drive my audi about the same distance to and from work for a magnitude of reasons, one of which being laziness. I work shifts and can start as early as 4am, who wants to walk 1.5 miles at 3am when they could leave the house half an hour later and drive for 5 minutes? What suits one group of people isn't guaranteed to suit another.
Ben why not keep the pug for the daily commute and as a track toy and then something like a 320d touring to replace the fabia?

You lost 25 minutes somewhere there but I understand what you mean.
Whilst walking 1.5 miles doesn't seem much, that's 6 miles per day so an hour and 30 out of his day and most importantly 45 minutes out of his lunch leaving him just 15 minutes to actually walk the dog.
Plus walking, cycling or running in the Winter is no fun when you've got no way of getting clean and dry at one end and no time to do it at the other end.
A hybrid would tick a lot of boxes if they were readily available in that price range.
I do walk fast but I used to walk 1.8 miles each way Liverpool Street/Southwark and it used to take me 22 minutes. I reckon I could have done it a bit quicker but pedestrian commuters used to get in my way
As Mark says 4 mph should be doable as normal walking i.e you can walk without rubbing your thighs together as opposed to shuffling.
But this thread is about buying cars not walking so back on topic ...
X-Type 3ltr V6 Sports Estate on LPG should tick all your boxes Ben
1) Can be used as a track toy
2) Can Carry Dog and Wife
3) Lovely waft machine on long distance journeys Cabin is a nice place to be
4) LPG gives you diesel economy ( I see 60+ eqevalent on M-way Journeys )
5) Car parts and servecing are cheap
Hmmm... X-Type - sounds rusty and full of electrical excitement, like the S-Type - or is that limited to the S-Type?
It's a thought, although wife wont drive it, and if I am going down the route of something wife wont drive, it would open up more options!
Thanks though, it's giving me some food for thought
