    The Big Diesel Screw-up

You can bet this thorny issue is going to be bumped down the road to the next government.

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-30119279

The UK government will come under renewed pressure to cut pollution from diesel vehicles following the latest ruling in a battle over clean air.

Nitrogen dioxide in cities is illegally high and the European Court of Justice ruled judges must force ministers to clean up the air as soon as possible.

The pollutant comes almost entirely from diesel vehicles.
They say that could force ministers to order a major retrofit of pollution controls on buses and lorries; ban diesel cars from cities; and install new technology to ensure that diesel cars comply with the emissions data from manufacturers.

London is so bad due to the Buses and Taxis, your average diesel car running a DPF puts out less emissions now than its petrol equivalent.

So basically they need to renew all the busses and taxis and scrap the diesel cars over 5 years old.

    Diesel scrapage scheme anyone

Shove all the Taxi drivers into Prius or similar.

Some cities already have mainly Prius taxi people.

That sign won't be there for long tho, I'd give it until about 11pm on Friday before someone takes a shit on the back seat.

    Yep, I totally agree.

My 116D costs £30/year to tax and puts out minimal emissions. I'd be pretty annoyed if I couldn't take it into town haha.

what this all really means is the govt have decided theres too many cars in the cheap tax bands such as free/ £30 a year so now looking for something to pick on to charge more money to make up the difference. All theyll do is put more road tax on all of us with slightly older diesels as thats apparently the way to cut pollution.

They sort the tax bands by CO2 emissions not by Nitrogen dioxide, NO2!
Your dirty stinky diesel produces more of these than any petrol car! CO2 affects the atmosphere, nitrogen dioxide is bad for human as its toxic.

I for one can't wait for diesels to F@€£ off!

Euro 6 targets NO2 so any diesel meeting this standard will be better than Euro 3, 4 or 5 cars.

I can see then changing the tax bands and having seperate diesel ones that look at the NO2 levels. They will have to change them soon anyway even for petrol cars as most Fiestas sold now dont pay any road tax and as thats the UKs best selling car thats a lot of money they are loosing out on.

Don't diesels put out alot of fine particulate matter as well, the sort of stuff that enters the lungs and may cause issues??

The tax should to based on village as it's already a little unfair on say a little old lady that does 2500 miles a year yet the sales rep that does 30000 a year is paying the same.

It's a bunch of bollox when they could have just put a few more pence on fuel so those who burn the most fuel pay the most.

Right now people who do 60k miles a year might be paying nothing while some doing 6 miles a year pay £500.

Pencil pushing civil servants in Whitehall have got nothing better to do than invent complex taxes to justify their jobs

DPF's take care of that... well until it goes into regen and burns it all down the exhaust ..

interesting new direct petrol engines are coming under fire now and will require GPF's for future emissions standards due to the amount of petrol particle matter they emit............

Not likely to go away anytime soon tho unfortunately, the oil market is a ****ing beast.

Member of the Opec oil cartel may decide to cut production to support prices. Brent crude was trading at $80.25 a barrel on Monday, down 11 cents, while US crude was 10 cents lower at $76.41.

Iran, Libya and Venezuela have urged other Opec members to support oil prices by reducing output, although Kuwait has said that a cut was unlikely.

How many other markets is it ok to influence the price in your favour?
