    Poncams vs step 1's

considering getting 256 cams, not after anything bigger, just want bit more mid range torque ideally and high end horsepower gains are a bonus

Question is am I right in seeing the lift and duration are exactly the same (so same gains/driveabiltiy) with poncams and hks step 1's? Would I only be deciding between brands and cost?

Just want it cleared up before deciding

If your getting cams id recommend getting adjustable pulleys aswell. We can get a cam and pulley kit from tomei if your interested :-)

Would just be interested in the cams to be honest, cheapest I found is FRsport and that's including import tax

No need for adjustable pulleys for 256 duration cams that can be used with stock valve spring. Keep the VVT/VCT and stock valve springs for better midrange.

What turbo are you running? Stock cams will easily support 350+ rwhp. Here in Norway, several SR20DET's have been dynoed at 400+ rwhp with stock cams (using E85 Ethanol).

I'm running a GT2860RS with Tomei Poncams, dynoed at 334 RWHP with 98 RON fuel. But I'm considering downgrading to lower duration cams for better low / mid range torque for street use.

Atm, I'm looking at Toda 248 dur / 11.0mm cams and upgrading the turbo to a GTX2863R.

Tomei Poncams would be perfect then. Should easily gain 20-25+ rwhp at the top range while maintaining a good midrange. Keep the VVT sprocket and stock springs, no need to change them for these cams.

I wish I'd gone the bigger pro cams step 2 personally
I have the uprated valve springs retainers and head work and my VVT is all brand new so would be in use still

I was debating step 2's but I'm only after midrange torque really and don't want to be knocking out gearboxs ever 5 mins and don't fancy paying out for z32 conversions, although it would be nice

Step 2 ftw, I think you can get a step 1 intake and step 2 exhaust cam from HKS for a good set up
Jez recommended it to me a while back

I'd fit springs which ever cams you decide to go for - the standard ones are pretty weak. HKS step 2 are my favorite with the gt2871.

As cool as step 2's would be I think I would opening up reliability issues with gearbox as I would most likely end up pushing 400hp

Not 100% sure on this route of 256 cams anyway yet

Heard the stiffer springs ruin VVT and will have them rattling (not sure how true) I've got a silent one and don't fancy turning it into a tractor

My VVT rattled, fitted a new one and s15 VVT solenoid since then has been perfect since August rebuild
Doubt stronger springs and cams would affect VVT.
Forget all of this and get a vet head and sr20vet it 👍

Cams won't really affect the durability of your gearbox. They just give you more power at the high end. It's low end torque that kills the box.

They increase the torque in the high end, but still the max torque is lower on the rev range?

Get springs and retainers, you do not want them going awol in the head.

Spring wise what are the ones to go for, seen so many different makes and some silly prices

Can't see the need for springs on Poncams, loads of people have success from just dropping them in And it's only really poncams that I maybe interested in,
