    Diff question

I'm thinking about buying an LSD for my S13. I need to know what the standard diff is. It's a pre facelift model so does it have the open diff? It has ABS also. Does anyone know the part number for the KAAZ 2 way that would fit mine?

    Stock diffs are OPEN.

all the sbody diffs are the same. the only thing that varies are the casings. you can either buy a cased bolt in diff OR buy a new one that needs to be dropped into your own casing. IF you buy a cased one, buying a 6bolt shaft one will save you work. ABS yes or no isnt that important as you can easily switch over your own back plate which will ensure your ABS works. if its already an ABS model diff, well less work again for you. IF you buy an s14/s15 cased diff, you will need to switch your back plate anyways as the bolt pattern is different AND also you will need the 2 front diff mount bushings + bolts.

MAKE SURE you put in new fresh (and correct) LSD oil no matter what you buy...
it will save you trouble later and ensures corret level and quality of oil.

new, this is what you need:

    second hand, for example this:

There's different kaaz diffs to chose. Is it the SAN2655 one that I need then?

I have the san2635 in mine it's replaced a vsld with abs so think the 2655 is to replace the open diff best to check with whoever is supplying it though

In that case I know that the san2635 went into mine to replace the vsld so the 2655 must be for the open, 99% sure that if you diff has an oil cooler it's a vsld and if not it's an open but sure someone will be able to confirm that so would be just a matter of picking the one that matches your current diff and getting someone to set it up and no more one wheeling

Sorry Neelie but most of this is rubbish and totally misleading. S body diffs are not all the same. The internals are different between open and VLSD models and also between S13 and S14 models and accept different output shafts which is why its important to buy the correct LSD for your diff. ABS has absolutely nothing to do with the back plate as the sensor is located in the casing nose near the input shaft on both S13 and S14 R200 diff. S13 back plates with or without ABS are the same. The back plate is different to the S14 though but this is due to the mounting bolts where it attaches to the subframe, 2 bolts vs 4 bolts. Also a non ABS diff is slightly shorter than one with ABS so the prop wont match up.

So Dastardly, if you want to know what diff your car has, jack up the rear end so both wheels are off the floor. Turn one wheel by hand. If the other wheel turns in the same direction you have an LSD. If it turns in the opposite direction your diff is open.

Nope, both LSD and open diffs on UK cars came with an oil cooler.

SAN 2655 is indeed for an open S13 diff.

true, i should have phrased this better. what i meant was that sbody diffs are interchangeable... the internals are indeed different between open and viscous BUT seeing as we are talking about a pre facelift s13 i presumed that the open diff part applied to HIS specific car and also the 6bolt pattern in terms of ABS sensor and prop length ha, learn something new everyday and gosh i got away lucky with all my diff swaps in my old s13 with never getting caught with the wrong casing (unknowingly ha). got the 2 wires in the back plate mixed up with the front. have to thank you for the correction steve as that would have confused the heck outta me shortly.

I thought that was a secret, Danielle. Did you just 'out' yourself ?

Mr Carter is spot-on as usual.

Just to add, make sure you use GL4 75W90 not GL5 oil as some of the GL5 oils can corrode the yellow metals found in the S13 gearbox and diff.
