    What PC/Laptop?

I'm after a new PC/Laptop and have a budget of about £400. I am well out of the loop on what I need/want. It is not for anything in particular so nothing to specific re: gaming etc. I am leaning towards a laptop or all in one desktop. I don't particularly want a tower PC due to space. Previously we have had laptops but only due to size - we don't need it to be portable.

    Any recommendations welcome

Just about anything will do but i would not go lower than say an i3 (hyperthreaded) + 8gb of ram - you should have a lot of scope for pc's of that spec in your price range.
I would increase the budget a little and get an ssd for the drive instead of some stupidly big hard disk.

Alternatively you could get a bare bones pc and put it together yourself for a better spec at price point.

Surely 8gb of Ram is overkill for a regular laptop? Got 4 in mine with an ssd and i5 and it's shit quick.

Try searching PC Specialist on Google.. They have a good range usually and they can build to a spec if you want.

Thanks for the advice folks. So I take it I will get more bang for my buck with a desktop than a laptop?

Got my business an Acer XC-605 mini tower from DABS.com recently - The ever so slightly bashed box saved me a wedge so I could get a better processor and still save money, came in at £340 delivered. Half the warranty but wasn't bothered about that. Voided it in minutes anyway

Oh it doesn't include a monitor though. But HDMI out so you can fling it in the TV or whatever if its just for surfing etc

Really depends what you want to do with it. I've always had laptops before that and still have it today a tiny 1gb netbook running xp always done what I wanted, the netbook that's pushing 10 years old was used for video editing even used it for ****ing around with photo shop, primary comp is dual boot window mint14 laptop with 4gb of ram as said quick enough and only dual core that I paid next to nothing for

I cant stand laptops, they are always a massive compromise... well they are to me as my no1 priority with a computer is performance.
Ok if you need the portability but i dont understand why so many buy these things and try and do work on them with there shitty wee keyboards, crap screens and rubbish grunt. A desktop nets you far more performance per £ always.
