So what happens about selling cars now? I need to sell my Saab as I'm not using it anymore. So I have to take the tax disc and keep refund it, How does the new owner tax it?

Not sure whether to chop the tax disc in tomorrow or wait till the end of next month.

I thought with the new system you could pay for a month at a time? That doesn't seem to be the case

Pretty sure it says you will be able to have a monthly direct debit

Can still only renew in 6-12 month periods from what I can see. A monthly direct debit would be ideal tbh

Still has to be 6 or 12 months but you can pay by monthly DD. For a 5% mark up.

Think you sign up for 12 months, there is a fee for not paying in full and you pay it monthly.

If you then sell or sorn car your direct debit stops.

May be the monthly thing only becomes available on the first?

From what I understand, you need to keep it taxed (or declare it SORN) until you sell it.

When you sell it, you will automatically get a refund when you send in the V5.

You both have to pay the tax for the month in which you sell it.

If you sell it on the last day of the month, the buyer gets unlucky and is responsible for a months tax for one day's use.
If you sell it on the first day of the month, the seller loses out on one months refund.

I believe that the DD monthly payment scheme isn't available until November.

Is the Saab still insured? as under the new scheme if it is uninsured you have to cash in the tax The new rule is called "continuous insurance enforcement" easiest method is just to Sorn it.

Right, have removed the tax discs from my Jeep and Volvo - sure I'm a couple of hours premature, but I like to live dangerously.

Mrs doesn't give shit, so her car still sports a ridiculously old fashioned round bit of paper in the windscreen.

I was able to sort mine at 6-30 this morning. I guess they are being swamped again now with last night's failures that didn't get up early enough this morning.

Give it til 11-55 this morning and try again. There'll likely be a lull about then. Don't leave it til after noon though.
