    Dvla tax change

Just recieved a renewal and on the envelope itself says as of the 1st October 2014 you won't need a tax disc but still have to tax it err

Any ideas on what that's about and what you have to do as I've just got the tax till jan 2015 ?

My brother recons he hasn't got a tax disc from taxing his car recently.

Have they started phasing it out or is it genuinely missing in the post??
It is showing as taxed until Aug-2015.

Have you been living in a cave for the last year or so, the tax disk is finally catching up with the 21st century.

Will be great to setup a DD and not have to cough up hundreds of quid every 6 or 12 month.

Just means those without tax blend in better.

Yep just means we will see more ANPR check points and maybe even fixed cameras that automatically send you out a fine.

Seems like a waste of money really, to catch those few people who declare SORN and continue to drive.
Anyone without tax and without sorn gets a fine in the post anyway.

It should save money on the admin because the whole thing should now be much more automated and computerized.

Auto reimbursement. Fantastic :-) Sucks to have to potentially fork out extra for tax though after buying a car, will defo have to factor this in.

wont have to fork out as such though as can pay monthly so going to be less than £20 a month unless your buying something new with a huge engine! and will just move from your old car to your new car

You can pay monthly? That's a pretty epic change (finally!). Shame I'm not there to benefit from it! (over here you have to tag/tax your car every year, and every time you buy a car.)

Sucks that you still have to pay a 5% admin charge for the monthly option though - they ought to make it the same whether you pay yearly or monthly otherwise people who can afford to pay a year up front are basically getting a discount.

Won't make a difference to the amount of intentionally untaxed cars on the road. Police rarely check them and rely on anpr to spot them.

Hardly mate, that's how most things are including car insurance. You're not getting a discount for paying the full whack, you're just paying a charge to use the monthly service.

They have introduced theft by taxation. Though they may see it as car transfer tax.

When you buy a car you can't buy it with tax. This is reasonably to stop people that can't tax a vehicle buying one with 11 months on it and then driving it uninsured.

You sell car on 12th of month. They don't pay back the remaining 19 days. Just any full months.
The new buyer has to buy tax from the start of the month losing 12 days tax.

They collect the SAME tax on the SAME vehicle for the SAME month TWICE. There is no other tax that can be collected twice for the same thing.

What this means is that for private sales the only reasonable date of transfer is the last day of the month and collection by new owner on the 1st. Now will the DVLA tax machine be able to cope? Will the number of transfers amount to a DOS attack?
