777s12 CA18DET wont start!

    Hello there!

I recently got this, a nice unfinished project, totally standard except it has a DET mounted in but hasnt been wired up or plummed in etc!

So first thing first was the wiring! Ive wired the relays in except for the fuel pump which im having trouble with, when attach the black/pink wire to the relay it doesn't work, but if I attach a ground it does come on but stays on.

    The interior is pretty mint!

    Just needs a clean.

    Exterior is pretty scrappy though!

    Missing the rear wing

And has a dented rear bumper!

So taking a break from the wiring/head scratching I took a look at the rear bumper. Dont have a manual so working out how to get it off was pretty fun!

I guess this is why its bent.

I hoping a heat gun will make it straight!

Should be able to straighten this bracket out.

Theres a bit of rust that needs to be sorted before the bumper goes back on!

Put on a new hopefully correct slave cylinder? was a 3/4.

Need a new Power steering pulley as this is a v belt one.

My plan is to get it running and then legal for the road, then just muck around in it for the summer, might even lower it Then I will pull the motor and sort the bay out and go through the loom properly eliminating all the spare wires as its a total mess in their right now!

Got a bit of a brake upgrade planned. Some cheap z32 26mm calipers.

Someone had previously painted them with brush! So put some paint stripper on.

    Gonna need one more coat.

    Bought some cheap intercooler piping.

    LOL@90 Degrees

Starting to clean up the lower arms.

    That's it so far.

Started to make a bracket for the intercooler, here you can see the previous owners top intercooler bracket!!

so made a top mount bracket.

I mounted it like this so I can get another bumper that hasn't been cut!! If only I could find one Otherwise I could mount it so more of the intercooler is visible but I would worry abut ground clearance.

    sorry for total noob question

Just need one more bend which i will have to order!! to complete pipe work.

Had a poke around the body!

    Which led to this!

    Which led to this!

    Which led to this!

So needs a bit of work there.

Also I sherlocked holmes some isht for this car, its soo hard to find bits for it.
Got some primera fans, a battery box and welded the exhaust.
Oh and changed the oil, which was black, guess this engine hasn't been rebuilt after all!

ok, Got spark so that's good.
I can hear the injectors ticking, not sure if number 1 is though as I pulled the plugs and when turning over number 3 spark plug hole gets really wet, 2 and 4 don't get wet but you can really smell the fuel and 1 you get nothing not a whiff of fuel just air.
So I'm a bit confused, its getting spark and fuel in 2,3 and 4 but yet doesn't even try to fire, just turns over.
So for next weekend will get new plugs and a noid light to check if the injectors are firing.
Could there be anything else stopping it from firing?

    Welcome to SXOC van

That is both a n00b question , and a very old question.
I'll leave it to the CA bods to answer. I have a proper SR, so no such dipstick problem.

    EDIT - more pics appeared.
FYI I changed my oil today, and am pleased with myself.

    Thanks Jon,
Well ended up just putting 3.5 litres in. Will probably mark it so I know if Ive lost any! Cant wait to get this running so I can blow it up and put an SR in! I imagine the wiring is very similar.

Also I had a little trouble with the ECU.

At first it wouldn't go into diagnostic mode, then I swapped it out with a spare ecu and that wouldn't go into diag mode either then I swapped back to the original ECU and then it did! Got code 55.

Then Later I read that the red/black wire from the s13 should go to pin 85 on the ecu relay (im guessing this is like a switchable earth like the fuel pump? so popped that on and tried to go into diag mode and it wouldn't again. Didn't try anything else after that just messed with the injectors.

Do you think ive fried my ecu?

This is it cranking, are both green and red lights meant to be on? is that right?

i admire anyone willing to take on projects like these lol.
the amount of random problems they throw at you is incredible lol....
you've done a great job on it so far anyways and hope you'll stick with it; dont give up!

cant help you with the injector/starting problem though. if you have fuel, and the plugs are ok and you've
tried another ecu, have you tried switching the coilpacks to see if the wet plug moves to another cylinder?
this would obviously indicate coilpack. has the car has an immobilizer or alarm etc fitted previously? these hidden
    gadgets can also cause problems.

Thanks will try the swapping of coilpacks just so I know they all work, the wet cylinder revealed itself with all the plugs out, its not even trying to fire, Yeah I know what your saying the work has been just the ton of small little jobs.

Like exhaust didn't fit the down pipe- so make new custom flange!
Snapped clutch hydraulic cable- get new cable!
    Custom making the intercooler pipes
    Mounting the intercooler
Heater pipes not fitted when engine was out - fit heater pipes in the smallest of gaps ever!
Turbo lines and turbo not attached while engine was out- again fitting in the smallest of gaps ! LOL
Random wires everywhere. Unknown condition of engine/gearbox!

Im not complaining cause I knew when I bought it but I just want to get it running and do some fun stuff! like slam it and fit the 10" wheels! Make a LSD for it etc! Paint! Big brakes! Put the American turbo kit and SE lip on!

And maybe just maybe even drive it!!! For whatevers left of the summer! Then I will pull it all apart and shave the bay and hydrodip the shit out of everything!!.

Yeah it had a turbo timer that I uninstalled. Couldn't see an immobiliser.

So bought a noid light to check injector wiring, got new plugs. Will check coil packs all this weekend.

I wont give up! will fit an SR if I cant get it running! When I don't get that running then I will give up!.

Oh and still need to find the correct S13 power steering pulley! if anyone has one let me know!

    So still to do.

    Fit the S13 suspension

so swap the lower arms, moog balljoints have been pressed in and have been greased! Poly bushes into the arms.
fit the driftwork tension rods- so then fit the S14 tension rod brackets.
Fit the S13 inner steering arms, arms are too long now so fit Escort outers!

I got 26mm z32 calipers took a while to find the 26mm disc for it! That's been redrilled to 4x114.3

Custom brake lines and Bm44 MC to be fitted.

Need to find the coilover to knuckle bolts for the S13 coilovers! or at least the size so I can order some.

Chop and re weld the S13 Cusco engine brace.

And probably a whole load of things!

    It started!!!!!!

so put the noid light on number 1 injector plug and nothing, no light. Put it on the others and it worked on 1-3. So I printed the wire diagram A0 ! my eyes arnt what they used to be.

So checking all the wire colours I realise that 1 - that's not an injector wire! and 2 - the injector plugs are on the wrong injectors! and 3! - every plug is broke!

Does anyone know if you can buy just the plugs?

The air regulator plug is chopped so need a lug for that.

Anyway my battery in my phone died so got my dad round to video it, Dads and phones though! he missed the actual starting of it, bless him.
Also I look really concerned about something - dunno what though lol.

So now need to time it properly and wire in the battery to the boot and tidy all the wiring up.

Also my dad was concerned that the actuator rod wasn't moving? when does it move?

Anyone know what this plug is for? Im guessing it goes to the original relays?

Looks like a great project, Paul.

The dipsticks on CAs are completely useless. You're only chance of getting the right amount of oil is to jack the passenger side, drain all the oil for a good hour and swap the filter then stick 3.5 litres in...which sounds like what you've done pretty much.

Don't go thinking SRs are better than CAs though. They're just as much trouble, they're less entertaining to drive and they sound like a wet fart

See if you can get someone to cut you that section of loom that feeds the injectors. It sounds like someone has fecked that up good and proper. I'd do it for you but I already did it for someone else so that section is gone

Regards the actuator not moving, as long as you have a simple piece of pipe running from the nipple on the T25 to the actuator, I'd not worry unless it won't stop boosting on the road.

I might have some coilover bolts for you. If I don't PM you over the next couple of days, PM me to remind me as I'm not going out at this time of night to look

Did the ECU show up yet ?

Thanks mate and yeah I got the ecu, thank u very much for that. I haven't tried it yet but I think I need to as for some unknown reason the ecu has stopped turning the fuel pump on, it used to! So had to swap a relay wire to an earth to make the fuel pump come on with the ignition.

Yeah definitely need that bit of loom, if I go over a bump the injector plugs would probably come off!! Thank goodness for that wiring diagram as all those plugs were on wrong the AAC, the air regulator- no wonder it wouldn't start.

As soon as I put new plugs in, put the plugs on the correct injectors it fired up first turn of the key but start after that it took ages to try and start. I don't have the air regulator wired up so maybe that's why?

One other thing I noticed was that number 3 cylinder was getting really wet, and the noid light on number 3 is brighter than all the rest. I'm not sure what to make of that?

The sr thing is not to do with thinking it's better just newer! I put a 1996 subaru engine into my panel van than my mate put a 2003 engine into his camper, his engine was so better worked out being newer.

Jonny if you do have the s13 bolts that would be great cheers.

I haven't been able to touch mine in weeks (been moving house, back to where I keep the car.) I've got lots of catching up todo!

Well managed to find a few more hours on this thing.
Properly wired in now, bought new injector plugs and fitted them.
Done most of the battery relocation.
Started it up and its running sweet, no misfire now.
Has a water leak from a split hose cant get to behind the engine., also leaks oil from the turbo so need to have all that off!

But now im stuck on the clutch, tried two different slave cylinders and can only get a really small movement. Tried a 3/4 and 11/16 both bled for like 10 mins definitely no air in there. Although I noticed a bleed nipple on the master cylinder, do I need to bleed that aswell.

here is the amount of movement you can just make it out.

any help or advice on this would be great, cheers.

You need to bleed the slave then the one on the master cylinder but the biggest quick-win you will get on a CA18DET is to replace the dampner and all the copperpiping for a braided line that runs direct from the master to the slave.

The dampner is a bastid to bleed !

Hosesolutions do one at a reasonable price. DW do a cheap one but it isn't designed to by-pass the dampner although I've been told it can be frigged to fit.

OK thanks Jonny, that hose does look a good idea. I don't have a dampener on mine. Will bleed the master cylinder and hope that works. Don't suppose you know which is the correct slave cylinder?
