    Weird boost problem

    Hi there!

So I have a new problem with the Nissan I have a whole 3si of boost

The weird thing is, I don't think it's a boost leak as there the car is running / idling fine and there is no whistling from the engine bay or popping and banging from the exhaust. It just seems like the turbo isn't making any pressure..

What could cause this?? I've checked the actuator arm and it is solid, and just in case I've checked all of the boost pipe connections and they all appear ok..

    Thoughts?

    David

Do a proper boost leak test you'd be surprised how a joint that looks good can leak loads

But surely if it was leaking so much as to only make 3psi, the car would be overfuelling to buggery? The car runs as well as ever just with very little boost

You say the actuator arm is solid. Is it meant to be solid? I don't know much about turbo's but I think there is a diaphram inside the actuator so it moves under boost?

Could be a split in a hose that opens up and effectively bleeds out all your boost lol

Considering it's free and easy it won't hurt!!

Nope if it runs well then it won't be a massive boost leak, you'd barely be able to drive it. Check that your wastegate actuator isn't stuck in the wide open position as if so it will struggle to make boost, but would still run ok as your MAF would be metering the correct amount of air going through the engine.

    Sounds good to me.

Maybe a stupid question, but which is the wide open position? What angle is the arm normally at with the gate closed?

Closed the pivot will be 90deg(ish) from the arm. open it will be parallel to is. But I don't think this is it as I had this problem and it still made boost just slowly. How does the turbo sound? Any rattling??

Maybe restricted intake or turbine wheels are damaged.

Weirdly this resolved itself yesterday, driving along with no boost when suddenly it went back to usual.

I'm guessing the wastegate arm was stuck.. does this indicate the onset of any big problem or is just a case of more lube required?
