Family Car choices - WARNING - THREAD OF FAIL (now partially justified)

With the imminent arrival of my son im in need of an estate car as my missus yaris t sport just wont handle the 3 of us and a dog.
Ive got about a grand to spend so realise im limited by choice. What would you guys suggest. Been looking at Saabs but worried about high repair bills or are they no different to an sbody on costs?

I had a 2003 passat estate 1.9tdi pd130, great for space, great for mpg, feels like a good safe you can pick them up for around the price you are asking, expensive to repair if you dont diy it as i found out.

I'm slightly biased, got a 9-3 tid estate and really like it.

Looking at the 9-3 seem to be loads of car for the money. Is it the 2.0T one

A6 is another good one Chris

As above , Passat or A6 130 tdi.

An A4 has poor rear leg room.

Best bet is to avoid anything with lots of gadgets as they tend to go wrong.

Saabs are a good bet and there are a few about so shop around and pick wisely.

In the same vein, Volvo V70s are cheap as chips and there are plenty in scrappers to cull parts from.

I'd avoid getting a 'fixer upper'. For one simple reason: With a tiny human in the house you will be too tired and have bugger all time to fix something. You just need something that works. I can see why it seems like a good idea, but 15 months ago I had ideas of relooming my project car. Now I'm just happy to have not needed to sell it
Mondeo/Asshat/E46 would be a great bet. You definitely don't need an MPV.
. Octavia estates are cheaps. Look for something with ISOFix as it makes baby seat choices easier (You'll find out soon that pretty much every baby transportation system seems to be compatible with Maxi Cosy car seats, and a lot of them are ISOFix based!)

At the risk of sounding old and practical, forget buying something fun to drive: It won't be. I'm not convinced any estate can be, (as much as I love fast estates). Concentrate instead on the important things: Safety, practicality, reliability and cheapness! In that order IMHO.

We've got an E46 330i tourer and it's been great, but think it may be out of budget.

avoid zafiras or at least petrol ones so many people have running issues.

Sound advice. Both as potential purposes, and on the road.

Unless you are an angry middle aged man. In which case, they'll suit you down to a tee.

Zafira GSi - wronger than a very wrong thing. Should come from the factory with AVOID stamped on every single panel.

Either you are a sadsack in a poplecurrier or you're not. There is no middle-ground.

I'd vote for a Saab 9-5 2002-. Excellent cars and very reliable

If you get a diesel Saab then only go for the 1.9 tid, avoid the other diesel engines.

9-5s were the number one choice on our list until our e46 was offered by someone I know.

Seem really solid, and the Aeros are lovely things with quite some pace
