    GT2871 or GT2860 for my 180sx?

Hey I need a new turbo for my 180sx, because my stock turbo is getting tired

Im pretty new in this "turbo-world", so hoping for some good advice.. I've tried to google alot, but still not sure what turbo that would be best for my sr20det.

I'm a little low on budget, and would be fine with about 300hk.

So what do you think? I've considered a gt2871 or gt2860. But what modifications is needed to be done, for supporting one of those turbos?

    Current spec (pretty much stock):
    sr20det redtop
    Greddy FM Intercooler
    Greddy hardpipe kit
    APEXi air intake
    APEXi flange
    HKS 3'' catback exhaust
    Exedy Paddle clutch

    Thanks

Uprated fuel pump, 740 injectors, z32 afm, mappable ecu and gt2871r .64 turbo

Should see you around 380bhp and 350lbft of torque

GT2860RS aka DiscoPotato is an old-fashioned laggy turbo.

GT2871R is the turbo of choice for powerful SR20DETs - less laggy and more power.

GTX series are the new kids on the block with earlier spool up and latest technology but the prices are a bit less friendly.

I've got a GT2560R on mine, whilst it's very quick to come on boost and makes the car very driveable it does limit me power wise. I've heard good things about the GTX series but like has been said they are pretty pricey. Fyi with the 2560r my car made 320hp and about the same ftlb torque at 1.2 bar. That's with similar mods to you plus 555 injectors, z32 maf and a power fc.

GT2560R is the same size as a standard T28, it just has a roller-bearing core so it spools up earlier than a standard T28.

Yeah that's it, basically a stock s15 turbo I believe, budget wise it's probably the cheapest option to get towards 300hp

    I made 311 on my old T28

Also wasn't there a thread on this recently? Maybe it should be stickied

    Its pretty simple really.
GTX if you can afford one
2781 if you want big power and can't afford a gtx
2560 if you want 300 with minimal lag
    T28 if you want 300 and can't afford a 2560

Okay it sound like I should go for a GT2871r. I can get one of those for about 250 euro used.

But what modifications is needed to make the 2871 fit to my sr20det?

That turbo is tried and tested on here. There are numerous people who run that turbo with stock engines all the way up to fully forged lumps with cams etc...

Full boost by 3500rpm and pulls all the way to 6500rpm.

Where ever your getting your info from, they don't know what there talking about.

Okay so it shouldn't be a problem?

But does it fit directly to my sr20 or do I need some new parts?

All you need is braided lines, which you should be upgrading to anyway and a slight modification is needed to the oil return.

It has to be the 52trim gt2871r for it to be a straight bolt on.

You can't "just" stick any bigger turbo on a car. It needs a matching set of upgraded components. Oh, and good luck finding a 2871 in good nick for 250 euro. I'd be a bit careful about who's advice you listen to, tbh, mate.

There are three different flavours of GT2871R (no GT2871 as far as I am aware. Nomenclature would suggest its a journal bearing 2871 but I don't think a non-rollerbearing version exists so they probably just forgot to add the R on the end when advertising it).

    All 3 have a 71 exducer. The difference is in the inducer diameter - 49.2 (48 trim), 51.2 (52 trim), 53.1 (56 trim).

    You want the middle one.

Prices for GENUINE Garretts usually vary according to condition and the more popular turbos usually hold their value pretty well. 750 Euros would be a good price for a genuine 2871 with modest miles and no play in the shaft.

Given a Genuine GT2871R costs the wrong side of a thousand pounds (over 1200 Euros) new, the 250 Euro one you are looking at is probably either a cheapy ebay copy, fecked or an absolute bargain.
