    Quadcopter bandwagon jumping

Rather than clog up the other threads on here I though I would start my own.

I am using a basic guide to make my quadcopter from scratch instead of using a kit only because I want a 'how difficult can it be' approach.

Its not going to be fancy or pretty as its just going to get crashed (very often probably) and be used as a trainer.

My base is going to be aluminium and plywood.

    First parts purchased:
2.0m of 20x20mm aluminium square bar
4x Hobbyking SS Series 18-20A ESC
1x Hobby King Quadcopter Power Distribution Board
1x Hobbyking KK2.1.5 Multi-rotor LCD Flight Control Board With 6050MPU And Atmel 644PA
    2x 10x4.7 SF Carbon Fiber Propellers L/H and R/H Rotation (1 pair)
3mm ply for the centre panels

    Need to sort:
    Wiring
    Plugs
    Motors
    Batteries
    Radio gear & receivers
    Perspex/polycarbonate
    Landing gear

Loads of other stuff I dont even know about yet

First import duty bill received so at least the parts i ordered are in the UK (big assumption). When they arrive i can start on my centre plates

Found this video - http://techcrunch.com/2014/04/27/her...it-for-a-spin/ which made my fairly retarded brain click round slowly - we have an oculus rift

Not so sure if its for my first attempt but its something to aim for

Having made a couple of templates out of 3mm board I decided to ditch that idea due to weight and flimsyness and just buy a frame kit. The kit also works out about 75% cheaper than the materials purchased to build from scratch - should have just done this in the first place

This is the kit - https://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/...ame_600mm.html

More esc's as recommended by HK - https://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/...Firmware_.html

Also got me some miscellaneous wiring /connectors but once I've got my power source, motors and receiver I'll know what's needed to complete.

I was thinking these motors if anyone can advise - https://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/...arehouse_.html

Ive used those motors on a couple of builds now and found them very nice to use. They can be a little noisy due to end float but Ive not noticed this have any effect on their otherwise great performance.
On that size frame with those ESCs and motors I would advise going for some 8045 props to begin with then move up to your 10s when you get better at controlling it

Ive well and truely caught the bug for quads now and have built quite a few. Im currently building my own design 250 racer

Thanks for the info. That's my next purchase sorted

Can't wait to actually start fitting bits together. I went to the HK festival of flight the other weekend and although underwhelmed with the quad display I really wanted to just get stuck in and crash shit!

Underwhelmed because the planes hogged the flying time mainly. Still cool enough but not what I was going for. The quads were in a tiny area by comparison and could only really hover.

Just realised I started this project over 5mths ago and have really only done about 1hrs work

Anyway, some of the bits collected to date

    motors

    lipos

    Flight control

    Poweeeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrr distribution

    Speed control

And mocking up the frame etc

Need to sort a charger and radio gear, maybe some additional props for testing purposes and we should be nearly there.

Should be a nice quad once youve put it together

Ive used most of those parts but never together in the same build.
Dont forget any little bits and pieces you might need, nothing worse than getting towards the end of a build and forgetting about a servo lead or a battery strap or something equally as cheap that prevents you from flying

Yup, finding that out already. Havent found parts I need yet but I have yet to properly put it together.

I need some solder and I am really struggling with the tools I have as they are generally just too big

    It's moved!

At least from the loft to the table.

Mocked everything up now. Think this is going to be the final position now. Need to order some washers and screws to complete. Prop adapter are on their way and I'm waiting for the transmitter I want to come back in to stock.

Got to tidy the wiring and fix everything down properly now.
