Glowplugs don't usually do much in direct injection engines.
IIRC they're not needed unless you're doing a cold start in sub zero temperatures.

No idea if it's related but I had a similar problem with my Mazda 3 - it took 6 months to find out the cause but turned out it was the injector rail. Something to do with fuel pressure randomly dropping off.
(the high pressure pump attached to the engine was one of the items they replaced - badly as it turned out, when I discovered diesel leaking everywhere )
