Black top has the "extra" bit at the front for vvt
is one better than the other
Red top is the jdm engine found in the s13 Silvia's and 180sx's, the black tops are found in the s14/s14a and s15 (s15 rocker covers are different due to coil packs)
You can not use a red top cover on a black top engine and vise versa.

The VVT or Bent cam rocker cover has a better breather system,seen a few of red tops/black tops with the top of VVT bent cam cover welded to the
lower half of the OE red/black top rocker cover,purely for the better breathing,
can't find a pic searched for yonks but certain seen it done
