Time to resurect an old project

Many years have passed since I last thought about this but my interest has recently been rekindled.

I have always thought that the rear lights on the 14/a are quite boring. There are some aftermarket ones but these, in my opinion range from all the way to

So, what Ive been thinking is that I should make some custom LED internals for the standard lights so that at least when they are switched on they are a bit more interesting

I quite like the shape of the Aston' Vantage rear lights and thought maybe I could replicate the style with patterened LEDs. Do you think it would suit the car? Any photoshop wizards fancy doing a quick mock up?

Alternatively if you are now thinking 'Dave, you are such a muppet, what would look really cool is [insert thought here] why dont you just do that?' then please share

I've been thinking about doing this with amber LED's for my bumper indicators. The lenses are smoked and the bulbs not the brightest. Personally I think it could work mate. Problem is all the tacky crap kits from Halfords etc have given them a bad name/image lol

That is exactly what put me off for so long. The market got flooded with Laxarse lights (that never even suited the Lexarse let alone anything else) now when you say LED lights people assume you mean the Lexarse style and they vomit then some one walks by and slips up in the vomit and himself, vomits, then everyone else vomits and/or slips up and it ends up with everyone vomiting and slipping up which no one really likes

I am thinking of LEDs on a board inside the standard cluster so that when switched on they create a different pattern. A lot of newer cars have this feature and I quite like the idea of doing this for the 200 but I am struggling with a pattern that will suit. I know we have Wise Square and a lot of people get a bit moist over them but they are a simple square block of LEDs and do nothing for me Im affraid.

Please let me know of any ideas such as a car you have seen with these that has a shape that you think would suit the 200.

But prepare to cry at the price....I know I did/do. Gutted they stopped doing silvia sidelights (not that I'd have to spare cash to spunk that much on sidelights)

make sure to get decent quality leds from phillips or cree etc and also use a voltage regulator as most of them are 12v (and obviously cars spike depending on the condition)

also consider using a pulse width modulator instead of a resitor setup as it will be neater overall

have a look on HID planet for more info

Would something like that suit the 200 do you think?

I completely understand what your trying to do, as i tried it myself. But i cant see how you would obtain anything but a "square" pattern if you are going to use the OEM lenses, as the red "lens" which emits the light is a square shape therefore i dont know how you would make a shape like the one above!?

either way keep on it. MY mate and I tried this, we had a few ideas such as 3 parallel lines for the tail lights, and an " arrow" pattern would light up for the indicators!

Yes it is but you also have the reflecter next to it and the centre panel on the boot lid to make use of

Second set of rear lights should be turning up this week so I will bake them and split them apart to see what the options are
