    PS cooler question

Anyone had PS failure due to their fluid boiling? Reason I ask is I've noticed my fluid bubbling after some heavy laps. Now this hasn't caused any real issues other than fluid weeping from the top of the pot but the sweat band I've wrapped around has soaked that up. It's so little and rarely needs topping up. I can't help but think that bubbling fluid is not really ideal and prevention's better than cure so I'm thinking a PS cooler will sort this. Is this a good idea or am I worrying unnecessarily?

Might be a worthy investment then. Blooming eck! Did it do much damage?

No i think it was minimal as the marshalls were on the ball. Melted his pas pot and a bit of damage to one of the polished rocker covers AFAIK. Unfortuantly that white stuff gets fooking everywhere

The problem with PAS fluid is once it's boiled, it's never the same again and goes a shiny-black colour. My old Fiesta was prone to boiling it's PAS fluid, could always tell as the steering didn't feel quite 'right' and the PAS pump used to make much more noise when turning tight corners, I think it's something to do with it breaking down when it boils and loses some of it's lubrication properties, although I could be talking bollocks. Was was a pain in the arse as changing it is a messy job, that stuff absolutely stinks, and you will never get the smell out of clothes!
I've got a s14 diff cooler I'm going to plumb into my s14a as a PAS cooler when I get a chance.

Steering feels fine which is why I've not been too bothered up until now but if there's a chance of it failing, like Ken's did, I'd rather prevent that.

I doubt it was heat from the PAS fluid that melted it, more likely under-bonnet temps that caused it. The PAS fluid would have to get stupid hot to melt the res.
But, I'd still be fitting a PAS fluid cooler anyway, as the standard ones they fit on most cars really aren't up to the job if you're doing anything more arduous than driving to ASDA.

You've clearly never been to Asda with me

Thinking about it, I probably boiled mine the last time they had Ginsters on offer.

Ps fluid in my old mx5 and s13s always pissed out the tank when at drift days. Just get a generic oil cooler off ebay and a couple lengths of oil hose. Connect one side to the low pressure side of the pot. And the other to the pump side.

i really dont think that kevs engine was down to just ps fluid boiling. Go to norfolk arena or pod drift days and id eager several people are topping up their ps fluid all day long (i was one of them) never caused any fires.

(High pressure side of the system comes from the pump in a large braided hose in a hard line and returns to the pot from the rack. Low pressure is the pot to the pump which is just normal oil hose)

Maybe just relocating the pot will stop the fluid overheating?

Anyone know what size hose I need?

    thats lovely above ^

i just have a driftworks one fitted.

    http://www.driftworks.com/power-stee...ooler-kit.html

i have an PS13 but i believe all the fittings are the same size. i needed to buy more hose neway.

the cooler does get hot, so it obviously does do something.

What size fittings have you used on the pump? Looks wicked!

The high pressure line is from ebay. its an6 and comes with adapters to bolt to pump and rack.
I use a gt25/28 turbo oil drain flange with an10 fitting for the oil feed line for the pump. It needs a small modification to the bolt holes.(5min job)
