Identify this diff please. quite a tricky one.

This diff was in my car, it locked fine for years, then it started to stop locking properly on tight first turns so i got it taken out to be looked at.

apparently the plates are worn and need to be replaced, however who makes it, and where to get the plates, and what is it? the only markings are N1

its a track orientated diff apparently, sending power instantly where its needed. the only other example ive seen of this diff is this.....

    http://www.driftworks.com/forum/drif...ml#post1280239

however, all tomei stuff ive seen clearly has tomei stamped on. this has no visible stamps.

i do not want a plated LSD as they clonk etc, this thing makes no noise when driving whatsoever so i want to keep it.

    Any help would be appreciated.

It's the same diff as mine as shown by your link it's a Cycolid/Torque biasing diff I believe, not really a diff for skidding more used for track and hill climb. I have been trying to find some info on them as i might sell mine, your best bet would be to email Garage-D see if they can get you a rebuild kit.

The name of the diff on Driftworks might be a bit of a red herring, the description of a cycloid diff is lifted from the abstract of this patent:

    http://www.google.co.uk/patents/US7749123

And it doesn't really look anything like yours.

Have to say that diff is fiendishly cunning.

    Found the beast.
US5904073 Balls and cam type differential gear
    http://worldwide.espacenet.com/publi...=5904073A&KC=A

Applicant and inventor are the same so doesn't lead to a maker.
I've not found a Japanese pat.
US pat isn't assigned to anyone and didn't pay the US fees so it was open to be made by anyone. Though it's possible to pay a bigger fee to restore a patent.
    Legal status of US5904073 (A) 1999-05-18:

    Event date : 2003/07/15
    Event code : FP
Code Expl.: - EXPIRED DUE TO FAILURE TO PAY MAINTENANCE FEE

The OP's plates have round tabs those have square cut.

TRAX is just a plated diff.

    Indeed it is.
I guess finding rebuild parts for them is going to be very hard...

There does appear to be a bit of spalling on the cam track.

    Found the guy's web site.
    http://www.mim-design.co.jp/history-e.htm

    1995
Hitachi Material Balltec "Balltec" Limited Slip Differential

Only problem is Hitachi division also appears to make the R200, R200V, R200H, R200Z for Nissan.
I suspect Nismo diff plates will fit but you need to measure yours up and then get someone with a stripped Nismo diff to measure theirs up. Then you need to work how thick you need the plates to be, 1.65, 1.75, 1.85mm.

    Or $20 each

    Wow, that's, erm... unusual!

Would you mind posting a few more details, like what the inside of the body looks like, what the plates engage with, and where the two-ball strips go (in slots in the housing, linking the two cam track pieces?)

At a quick glance it looks like it might operate on the same basic principle as the cycloid diff, but it's clearly a different mechanical arrangement. Also possibly similar in principle to a 'Cam and Pawl' diff, although I'm not certain.

Just bumping this as i need to get a couple plates to start putting it back together.

the smooth plate is 1.65mm thick, and the plate with the grooves (at least its suppose to have grooves) is 1.6mm thick

    the diameter is 91.60mm
from the outer edge to inner edge is 16.75mm
from the outer edge to the edge of one of the inner tabs is 22.85mm

i cant see a clear picture of the nismo plates posted to see if they look the same or are even the same size.

anyone with some more info would be AWESOME.

welded diffs suck for road use.

    im getting closer

    http://www.nengun.com/nismo/lsd-repair-parts

    they look like round tabs?

if id measured the smooth one at 1.65mm and the worn one at 1.6 would it be safe to assume it was meant to be 1.65? or can you get a 1.75mm and build it "tighter" as it were?

the nismos look like the grooves go the other way tho?
