I've done something a bit special, anyone know how I managed it???

Right, so I heard a knocking noise coming from the rear of my car and so went to investigate, I noticed one of the drive shafts had a lot of play and when I got it out I was confronted by this

I'm going to fit a new drive shaft obviously, but was just wondering if anyone knows why it has happened as never seen/ heard of it before, and don't want it happening again.

I'm not running a welded diff, or insane power...

    Have you removed it recently?

I fitted a new diff a couple of months ago so unbolted it from the flange but didn't remove completely.

Did you have to smash the shit out of it to get it off the diff flange?

Nope, it just popped out when I was lowering the diff, I've had the car almost 4 years so it's not like anyone else has messed with it either recently.

Certainly weird then, wondered if something might of been dislodged inside from a heavy removal.

Yea its baffled me, thought something might have flicked up and got caught but no signs of any marks around it.

I've never had much cause to play with driveshafts,
but a bashing with a brick at speed couldn't cause that.
Maybe you have a "faulty from new" joint casing.
I'd be curious to see how thick the metal is around that point when you do take it apart. i.e. is it an impact related failure or was faulty from new.

If there was a lot of play in the joint then it has enough distance to get a run up. That makes it hammer on the housing.

It's also how a failed big end bends the crankshaft.

Sounds like thats what happened, and would explain why it made a clonk when I touched the accelerator!
