tbh I just have an unswerving desire to own a VFR400 and I can't for the life of me work out why!
400s are fun little bikes and can teach you a lot that you won't learn if you go straight to a 600.

CBRs and ZXRs are physically bigger so, if you are lanky, they will probably suit you better than a VFR which is quite small.

I had a test ride on a VFR and (like a Duke 916) the bike disappeared under me when on the move so I felt like the crazy frog bombing along with nothing underneath me.

I bought an FZR400RR 4TJ in the end.

    lol

I'm only 5' 10" and 9 odd stone, it might be ok.

Still need an A1 license as they're over 49hp which would mean borrowing the bike off the test fellas. Not really wanting to get it restricted, I'd rather have the flexibility to get a bigger bike without having to dick about with another test...

400s are best left as track bikes. Its too much like hard work having to wring their necks on roads.

    You're just lazy.

The only problem I found with my 400 was it was too small for me and I was too old for it. 100+ motorway miles or a 20-minute track session would see me unable to get off the bike without help due to me having seized in a racer's crouch

You do have to work the gearbox a bit more than a big bike but that's half the fun of it. Also, 70 on a 400 feels more like 100 on a big bike so its better for your licence.

At 5' 10" even I was too big for mine, my knees were virtually touching my chest. Cant deny it was an exciting ride and looked the tits, but if I rode mine on anything other than empty B-Roads it was frustrating. The power bands were immense!

I used to like the VFR400 when I was a little younger but I am now 6ft 2" and 14 stone so I think it's too small for me

SV650, my mate has one so could be handy for tips etc. If I were to just go strait for a proper bike I am liking the twin headlight Bandit at the moment

Yip. But with that said - can't always go off these things. I tried a Falco when I was testing before buying the Sprint. Couldn't get my legs in the tank recess.

Aye. Think they're called 'Dominator Headlights' or something like that.
