    944 Turbo

Bought a 944 turbo ('87) a few weekends ago, it was a non-runner but after a bit of investigation on the web the DME relay seemed a common problem so tried that to save the hassle of pushing it onto a trailer. New relay in, started first turn and drove it home

It's standard apart from boxster wheels and bilstein suspension. There's some cool stuff they get from standard though - forged pistons, stainless exhaust, four pots all round and no pesky ABS.

I've bought and fitted the following so far:-

New Stabilus bonnet struts, DME relay and Bosch battery.

Next I decided to examine the turbo and do a compression test to check it was healthy before chucking a load of cash at it. Passed both tests with flying colours so next on the list:-

Track Pads, Timing belt and balance belt, oil/filter change, air filter, fuel filter, brake fluid and plugs.

Probs going to take it to knockhill on the 25th then decide what the plans are from there.

It's nothing to look at and scabby in places but a couple of pics:-

Have enjoyed this car so far, think I'm going to like it

    Dunc.

I'm no porker man but I seem to remember these had the biggest 4 pot motor at the time when they came out as in 2.7 litre 4 pot?
might have been the s4 with wider arches thinking about it ,
Good base for some fun looks lovely in white as well

Yeah they went from 2.5 to 2.7 to 3.0L with the 4 pot, it's got a balance shafts like a bike engine to offset the inertia of the pistons

    Mega smooth

Being the anorak I am had to google wiki, reads as the 2.5 '85 >'88, 2.7 was for 1 year strangely? (1989) then 3.0 afterwards
Don't know why but really like the shape of them, the way the arches flare out and the lines of the car,
should be a good cheapy (ish) track car, and they are surprisingly rapid standard according to the stats under 6 seconds to 60 is quick now

Andy the 2.7 and 3.0L was N/A only, all tubbies were 2.5L. The 3L N/A would be a nice car too imo.

Scottie yeah that's right, gearbox out back for distribution.

    Not after decals thanks bud

You up on the 25th Jamie?

They are a pretty chunky car so not that light bud, stated as 1180kg for early models up to 1330kg later in life so at a guess mine would be somewhere in the middle of the scale but no flyweight, I have fitted a slightly smaller battery though haha! The turbos are either 220bhp or 250bhp, again I don't know for sure which mine is but it feels like 220bhp if I were to guess.

Excellent. Love 944s and turbo's seem to be creeping up in value as well!

Lovely cars. Mate had a late model turbo years ago. Had some fun with him at Donnington and was surprised at how quickly he could get the power down exiting corners. Would leave me initially, i would just start to gain on him on the straight and under breaking then he would just power away again.

Such a great car on the road as well. Nicely balanced and so comfortable

Brakes were a bit meh iirc

Do they lend themselves to the typical turbo tuning? Gearbox and clutch strong enough to support a bigger huffer etc?

I have considered one of these in the past but bottled it. Nice choice
