    Lost compression on all 4...

    Hello,

Following this thread I have replaced all 4 spark plug, one of the plugs shattered when taking the old one out and I think some of the ceramic fell into the cylinder, and the new plug wouldn't seat in the head so I gave up and towed the car to a local garage and asked him to have a look.

He has done a compression test and advised that the compression is low on cylinders 1-3 and on 4 where the ceramic fell there is no compression at all.

He says that he doesn't take heads off or strip down engines anymore, and I'm a good 20 miles from the nearest specialist. Can anyone hazard a guess at what I've fcuked up? Its gonna be an expensive job if I have to pay a tow truck and then pay a specialist to strip it down as well

    Cheers
    Neil

do you know what he is classing as low compression? assuming test was done when engine was cold?

Sounds like classic inlet valves symptoms.

There's more investigation work to do first, but if it's that then it's head off and head refurbished, refurbished head back on. Head swap is about ~3-4 hours labour for someone that knows what they're doing and ~6 hours for someone that's not tackled one before. You'd need a new gasket set as well - including turbo gaskets, which I think you might find the most economical way of doing is to buy the complete Nissan engine gasket set and keep the stuff you don't use.

This is all assuming, of course, that the ceramic from the plug hasn't gone down into the bores and munched the block as well - otherwise it's total engine rebuild time.

I dont know what the compression test result were, but I assume it was from cold the engine was struggling to start let alone run long enough to warm up. As a precaution, I've sent it up to DCMS in Burnley so that Graham can have a look. Hopefully it'll be something small I've only just had this engine put in
