what is the current law on taking a car off the road

I've just taken my s13 off the road so I can strip it for major welding work and the insurance is due to expire.
I wasn't going to renew it as I won't need to use it for a few months but I want to keep the tax on. And not place it on sorn .

So my question is can I do this without reinsuring or do I have to sorn the car and let the dvla know . As I'm aware the law has changed the way you can take a car off the road and mine is kept in the garden on the drive.

    Thanks

If it's taxed it needs insurance. If you want to let the insurance lapse you need to sorn it.

Cos he isn't doing SORN, cashing in what's left of tax and letting the insurance lapse. He's taxing and insuring it. Have to have a MOT by time tax is due next.

Or he SORN's it when the tax is next due and the MOT has lapsed.

If a car is off the road and on private land, It can have nothing. Unless it has tax, if it has tax it MUST have insurance. MOT doesn't matter.

I think Peter's point is that he can't avoid SORNing it indefinitely so maybe he should bite the bullet and SORN it now.

SORNing the car doesn't have a social stigma attached to it as far as I'm aware

Sorry to hijack, but i'd like to ask a daft question...

If a card is SORN'd, and MOT expired, in order to get the car somewhere for MOT, is the only option to trailer it?

No, if you have it booked for an MOT you can drive it directly to and from the MOT station. As long as the MOT station is within a reasonable distance.

Yeah, and I can't get insurance without Road Tax, and I can't get Tax without MOT

The plan is to get my old S13 back on the road after not moving for 2 years....and so I see no option but having to trailer it to MOT place (for MOT ....AND ALOT OF WELDING )

You can get insurance without anything pretty much.

If the car is unsafe, you can't drive it to the MOT station.

If it is safe, you can leave it on SORN, insure it, book an MOT, drive it there (not 4 days before the MOT though), have them weld it and MOT it and then drive it home. Then tax it and your all good.

If the MOT man is willing, just get him to book it in for an MOT on the day you drive it there then move the MOT once its there so it happens when the car is ready.

Thanks all Sorry for daft questions - just looking forward to getting S13 on the road again...

    Okay, plan is to:

    1) Get insurance
    2) Book it in for welding & MOT
    3) Drive SORN'd car to Welder & MOT, with insurance sorted
    4) Get welded & HOPEFULLY MOT'd
    5) Get tax'd

Now i'd just be a bit paranoid of sorting insurance for a year, if it ends up costing too much to get it through an MOT.

...i'm not sure if getting daily insurance for the the 35-mile trip to Welder might be safer option?

You will always have a 14 day cancellation period where you can cancel the policy without a fee being applied. So if it's going to cost too much you can simply cancel and get your money back.

You will get charged pro-rata and, if you've gone via a broker, it will be a ballache getting your money back.

If you start looking at day-rate insurance, it won't cover modified cars and even if its standard, you may be cheaper looking at getting it towed.

Can you not get someone to have a look and decide if it is worth repairing before you cart it over to the MOT station ?
