Chilli growers, show me your setups

I was given some chilli seeds for Christmas and a self watering herb pot thingy. But the instructions on the seeds talk about growing under controlled conditions. I know there are a few chilli growers on here.

    Seeds are for
    Superchili
    Numex Twilight
    Naga Jolokia

Any advice at this point is greatly appreciated

you dont "need" controlled conditions but there is no denying the fact that Chillies prefer a hot climate.

With that in mind, put them where they will get enough sun ..... thanks to last years washout in bristol, I finally got a bout 1 -2 chillies per plant in late october ... about 4 years previously when we had sun, I got about 30 chillies per plant from July onwards to November.

I have found the best tactic is either (a) use a greenhouse (b) if indoors move them around the house at different times of day to keep them in the best sun ... both of these though required me watering them on a daily basis .. that said though sometimes they grow better if you starve them, feed them, starve them .... it seems to make them fight to grow harder

They will grow outside, but have LOADS of predators ... snails and slugs love the hot stuff ... and green / black / you name it fly eats the rest.

Plant food also helps in the water (tomato or whatever, I cant tell the difference)

Mine are just on the kitchen window sill and I'm pleased to say have survived the winter so have a bit of a head start this year. To start the seeds off I wrap them in a moist folded up piece of kitchen towel then place in a resealable bag, blow it up and leave in the airing cupboard or other warm place. After a week or so you should see roots sprout from the seeds and then pot them.

I can't be bothered this year, no sun, too much rain and hordes of slugs and snails. Proper glass greenhouse with a vent is the only way to have a chance of getting good results outside.

Although I may cheat and grew some under a light.

A light would be great, I just don't have the room .... I run the window sill lottery and prey for sun

I've got about 40 different types of chilli plants this year.
Luckily I have a green house. My scotch bonnet, apache and 2 large habaneros have survived winter. Mainly more unfortunately went to plant heaven I was very late starting last year.

As has been said, kitchen roll and some zip lock\plastic sandwich bags.
Moisten the tissue, place seeds on tissue, put in warm place, (airing cupboard) check a few days later and see if you have germination if not reseal bags, if dry spray with a bit more water and check back again.
Get some simple pots, half decent soil, and place in a warm sunlit area. Ie windowsill, greenhouse.
To water, don't drown them, spraying the leaves I've founds the best way. Chilli's don't like high levels of nitrate, so watch how much feed You give them.

If you talk to me really nicely I might bring a small selection of plants with me to the weekender

Some of mine from last year:

I got plenty of jalapeņos and cayennes last year but couldn't get my scotch bonnets to grow
I started them off on the windowsill and moved them out to our polytunnel once frost had passed
(looks like it'll be a short summer this year again)

I saw a small cheap grow tunnel in lidl today that'd do the trick
    Good luck

Anyone managed em outside? I am growing quite a bit outside this year but last year chillis failed to do anything. I do not want to grow inside or in a green house type thing as i dont have one.

I've got a few orange jalapeņo, and some normal green ones.
Mine are all in the propagator at the moment.

Last year was getting fruits off the habanero and scotch bonnet until October/November time. That's in the heated greenhouse though.

    Currently running 1x52cm heated propagator.

And most of the growth so far are the tomato plants.
