For a few quid more you can get the Radeon 7870XT which uses a slightly cut-down version of the chip that's in the 79xx series. It's a bloody good card for about £200 .

Other than that, nah, that spec should be up to the task at hand .

Yep. And that's £4 below my cost price . Have a read up about it, it's not a bad card. If you're going to go 3 screens then the 79xx-series are a better bet, but for single screen it's either 7870XT or 7950. I'm about to grab a 7950 because I want both the free games that come with it (Bioshock Infinite and Crysis 3) rather than one of the two games that come with the 78xx cards (Bioshock Infinite and Tomb Raider). The games are free with any 78xx or 79xx card by the way . Basically, it means I get a better card at almost zero extra cost because I would have bought Crysis 3 anyway .

Depends on your total budget though. If the 7870XT pushes you over then the 7870 will still be fine for most stuff right now on a single screen .

EDIT : And that's a Gigabyte 7950 card on its way to me. It would appear that it is easily and safely overclockable to near-as-dammit match a stock 7970 for performance .

Just remember with that XT, if you wish to crossfire with it you will need to use another Tahiti based video card, this is the 7950 or 7970 or of course the exact same as the one you have.
You cannot crossfire the boggo standard 7870 with the 7870XT based ones as... they aint the same gpu's.

Imho i would get the 7950 based card and over clock it, as it will end up faster than a stock ghz edition 7970... which is the fastest (affordable) single gpu card out there

If you buy anything from Overclockers, just hope you dont have to send anything back, their after sales is absolutely shocking, and it hasn't inproved in 6 years!

    Cluck, this one? http://www.ebuyer.com/342450-gigabyte-ati-7950-gv-r795wf3-3gd

Sideways, I very much doubt ill go crossfire but thanks for the heads up. Ill have a look at the 7950 but think itll be out of my price range really.

Vez, can you go into any more detail? Never really heard any bad things about overclockers

But but but but Vez, the internet is the future, shopping is so much better, easier and cheaper on the internet. What could possibly go wrong?

    @Sideways - Yeah, if it's within the OP's budget then it's a no-brainer but the 7870XT comes very close to a stock-clock 7950 for £50 less.

Overclockers my experiences: I ordered two WD Raptor drives, they came badly packaged, in an express freight plastic bag, in a box wrapped in a single layer of bubble wrap. Needless to say one was DOA. They point blank refused to replace both of them despite the inadequate packaging - only one was replace, and this was after me DRIVING to get the thing replaced.

I have experienced parts missing from within products, and you will have to fight tooth and nail for them to take the item back as its not as sold. They have even said the parts arent in the box, when the packaging clearly states they are!

I use Scan, they are local to me, I can drive to them and I have NEVER had any quibbles about faulty items, and I have taken my fair share back. I have bought 3 PC's from them, they have never had any issues, and the build quality is second to none; I am yet to find a PC built as well as theirs, the attention to detail is phenominal!

Thats fair enough, looking online reviews seem to say the same up to a couple of years ago.
Had a bit of a swap round and now getting pretty much everything for ebuyer.
    Coolermaster haf 912 case
    Corsair tx650 modular
    Asus p8z77-v pro
    I5 3570k
    Corsiar vengance low profile 2x8gb
    Thermalright sb-e extreme
    Samsung 128gb ssd
    Gigabyte 7950

This is getting out of hand

I hate to harp on about it but try Kingston HyperX stuff instead of Corsair. See post #78 in Delboy's new PC build thread for why .

Nice spec though. And that Gigabyte board overclocks so easily. I've been running mine at 1100MHz GPU clock and 1400MHz RAM clock without any side effects thus far and Ive been pushing the card hard in Project CARS (which is a real graphics card punisher, but oh so worth it ). It came pre-clocked at 1000MHz GPU clock and 1250MHz RAM clock .

Del got the Kingston 10th anniversary stuff which is standard size (ie, low-profile) with a metal heat spreader. I've found with my own RAM that the standard heat spreader doesn't take too kindly to overclocking though, so either leave it at the standard 1600MHz speed or get some faster stuff in the first place - they have them in DDR3-1866, DDR3-2133 and DDR3-2400 as well as the 1600Mhz part .

    Part numbers :-

    DDR3-1600 - KHX16C9X3K2/16X (2 x 8GB)
    DDR3-1866 - KHX18C9X3K4/16X (4 x 4GB)
    DDR3-2133 - KHX21C11X3K4/16X (4 x 4GB)
    DDR3-2400 - KHX24C11X3K4/16X (4 x 4GB)

It looks like they don't do 8GB modules at the higher speeds at the moment. The web-site with all of them - including links to spec sheets - is here
