    Any VAG experts here?

Everyone on here will proclaim to be a vag expert but I'm talking cars.

A spring snapped a coil on the front of my golf yesterday. Not surprising given the mileage and state of the roads round my way and the conditions on site etc etc etc

Had a quick nosey last night and it looks like i need to take the hub off to remove the strut. Can anyone confirm if this is correct or can the spring be removed with the stock still fitted? Is there enough wiggle room?

    Thanks

(going to buy a Haynes manual if i get chance today before anyone comments)

Surely there is a download somewhere like there is for most cars? Be thankful its not a Mondeo, you have to drop the subframe for those

That way makes taking the hub off look like the easier option tbh

I'm a vag tech, take wheel off, undo 30mm 12poiny socket for driveshaft. Undo 3x 13mm bolts for bottom ball joint. Undo 18mm nut and counter gold it with multiplier tool for the pinch bolt. Use a separating tool around the back of the hub, slide hub down off the strut, take off plastic top cover on top of the strut, undo top bolt and Presto one shock is off

It's a mk5 but that reads like it looks. Thanks

What's the separating tool that's needed?

Just seen it in the thread mark posted. Looks like I'm going to the vw service centre over the road on my way back from halfrauds then!

Can I use a screwdriver or chisel etc as the spreading tool?

Not going to damage anything like that?

I never took the hub off when i put coilovers on my mk4. Just took the wheel off, undid the strut (left on loose on top)banged a chisel in the clamp and pushed the suspension off the strut with a bar
