    What Hatch?

    Hi SXOC!

I'm looking to get a hatchback as a daily driver. My 200 is taking a battering and I never have the time to keep
it maintained the way I'd like. What with my mileage going up this year as well, I need a slightly more practical
car to run day to day that I can just use and keep me on the road. I carry a fair bit of stuff from time to time
but an estate is a bit on the large side - I think a hatchback is the right sort of car, but I'd like something
that drives well, is a bit fun, and is a nice place to be. I'm not that fussed about Diesel/Petrol, but a car with around 30MPG
    or above is OK.

My current shortlist includes the following:

BMW 1 Series, 120d / Similar petrol engine. (expensive to maintain?)
Renault Clio Renaultsport 197 (Too raw?)
    Suzuki Swift Sport (Slow?)

Cars I'm not too fond of - mostly because I think they are a bit boring.
    Golfs
    Fords
Audis (nicely built but I don't want an A3. Or any Audi)

Let me know what you think - any advice will be taken or ignored equally

    Cheers!
    Sprout

Fabia VRS did me pretty well for 2 years. Very frugal. The equivalent Polo is probably very similar to drive, but nicer to be in I would think?

    Any thoughts on budget?

I love my mate's C30 D5. Does around 35mpg with him driving like a nutter everywhere, but would easily do more I think. Comfy, stylish, fast, sounds ok for a diesel too.

Only thing is, the boot space isnt all that great.

Hmm I do like the look of the Volvos. As long as I can fold down the seats I don't care a huge amount about boot space. It's probably got to be bigger than a Polo/Fabia though.
Budget wise, 5-6K? Mostly looking for something 5 years old or so, with 50-60K Miles just to keep things fresh/maintenance worry free.

I have swapped minds about A8, M5 and Audi S4 Avant so far, so this is my closest approach to being sensible! A hatch is very necessary due to the size of objects I need to carry.

They're definately my favourite so far. Shame a 123d is just out of budget though!

Seat Leon is worth a look, I always recommend GTI-6's as well coz I love my one

Maybe a fast Megane, they must be in your ballpark nowadays?

If the Leon is like the Ibiza in any way, I'd hate it. Steering/throttle and brakes were awful. GTI-6 would be older than I'd like but as an ex 205 driver I think I'd love it. Megane 225, bit thirsty maybe. Would probably avoid turbo cars if I can, too tempting.

Apologies if I'm blind and missed it, but what sort of driving are you going to be doing and how far? As if it's town driving and not high miles, I wouldn't bother with a Diesel.

Mot much town, mostly motorway. Only diesel I like is the 120d or the volvo posted above.
I guess not high mileage, but 30-40 miles a day.
