    Smart TV

Im going to be buying a new smart tv in the new year and will also be looking into getting storage for downloaded media. Id like advice on what would be my best option. A USB hard drive plugged into the TV or a network hardrive plugged into the router

I have a NAS setup (Logitech Readynas) conected to my network. I don't have a smart (enough) TV so I stream via my PS3, which works well.

Be aware that if you intend to stream over wireless, you may struggle to stream full HD movies, certainly the PS3's wireless chip can't handle it. Don't know if the double-N wifi standard would hack it. Otherwise you have to go wired (which is what I've done).

What's the point? I have my PC plugged into my (non-smart) TV.

    10m HDMI cable FTW.

What about using a Raspberry Pi and XBMC?

For me its the bonus if not having to run across the house to pause, rewind, etc etc!
I use a pretty low spec pc, but will get a linux based NAS when I find one with the capabilities I want at a reasonable price.
I've also got an old Athlon XP I may try to see if it works. Serving media isn't really a lot of effort for a pc, so to be honest you can get away with using the stuff other people are binning!

Is echo what's said about wireless: its junk for media. Hardwired or homeplug are the only viable options IMHO.

Install unified remote or similar onto your phone for free and control your PC from the comfort of your sofa!

Why, don't you have a wireless mouse?

I got one to play with a few months ago and it really is very impressive. Airplay, iplayer, controlled from my phone, easy to set up.

With the combination of devices I have plugged into my TV already (sky box for recording + iplayer, PS3 for bluray + downloads, apple TV for netflix + airplay) I don't actually use it but Pi + bluray player would be less than £100 and give you everything.

My mum got me an Apple TV 3 for Christmas, its pretty cool but between my Xbox, ps3 and smart tv it doesn't offer anything I didn't already have other than the airplay.

I'm hoping one day they'll finally crack the jailbreak for it so I can run xbmc then it will serve a purpose
