House, if you like witty, quick, sarcastic writing then you will love it.

all series are finished so you dont have to catch up with anything, extremely well written, great cast, not a huge amount of continuing storyline so you can pick it up and leave it whenever you want,

Don't watch much TV but another vote for Walking Dead. Just finished series 2, got series 3 to watch.

As for films, watched Inception this evening, brilliant film.

Pleased that somebody mentioned The Shield. It is the best tv series ever IMHO, really well made and much more going on than The Wire, The Sopranos etc. Sons Of Anarchy is by the same writer or something and you can tell by it's style, it is also good but not as good as The Shield. Dexter is worth watching too, although the last 3 seasons have not been so great. But the first 4 are very good.

There is also the HBO War mini series'. Most people will always recommend Band Of Brothers, and it's really good. I preferred Generation Kill as I thought it was much more realistic and loved the humour. I got bored of The Pacific and stopped watching it after 4 episodes.

For British stuff, I enjoyed Luther and more recently Dirk Gently was very funny.

On Dexter, I thought the last season rocked. I do agree that it would have been a cult classic if it had ended after season 3 or 4 and the longer they drag it on for the less credible it becomes though.

Just finished watching a series called 'Reaper' it got cancelled after the second season but its very funny and has a great cast. Well worth a watch & Sock is amazing ..

I hate when they do that - I got really into a show called The Black Donnellys and it cancelled after one season just when it was heating up.

Yep, that pisses me off no end. There was an excellent scifi series called Defying Gravity on BBC in 2009 that lasted just one series before it got canned. The story had only got started and suggested some pretty interesting story lines to come. Ive just realised that 3 years later Im still a bit annoyed about it. Same with Firefly.
