Just drowned the Peugeot family car :(

With all the wet weather lately round here i inevitable got stranded, This was fine because i wasnt in the sx so could go through some deeper water. Or so i thought.

I was following the route that all of the other cars were taking and going at a speed that kept a bow wave etc. What i didnt accound for was the stupidly low Air intake!! I went through a good 200M length of flooded section (about 10") with no problems but the final little puddle was the end of my journey. Id say it was 12" deep which at a guess is just the right height to submerge the intake

I have towed the car home and checked the air filter which is soaked, the car will not crank over much, Maybe 1/2 a turn. I think i can safely say it has ingested some water!

My question is, what damage am i likely to have done to the engine? and what damage to the ancillaries, Alternator etc? If i am lucky i can get the water out of the bores and change the oil etc and all will be good! but what else is likely to suffer a few weeks down the line?

The car is a 307 2.0HDI with a DW10 TD engine (90hp), Lovely little car too

    Bent rods is a possibility.

When a mate did that in his Capri years ago it broke a gudgeon pin and sent the rod through the block

Diesel engines are made of sterner stuff, so you might be OK, but you need to get the water out of the cylinders which is stopping it from turning over.

Change the oil, then take the glow plugs out and crank it, see if you can blow it out the top

If it turns over then, chances are you'll be OK.

SX is better at going though deep water than any Pug. The air intake is as high up on front panel as they can get it, cone filter is in engine bay and well protected. Someone with a 13 reported they have forded with bow wave of water over the bonnet. PSA fit puddle hover intakes. What Pugs don't do is scoop water into footwells though the rotted out bulkhead / floor seam. After a similar fording to yours I had water in the cabin but carpet was out for welding and it didn't reach the ECU connector.

A diesel has much higher compression so needs less water to lock. If it doesn't bend something then the head lifts and the gasket fails.

That will have rods like a banana Lots of cars these days have air intake scoops that are stupidly low, normally in the front bumper

FMG killed his zx doing the same thing.

As a rule french cars have low intake systems

You might get lucky - you might not if you hydrolocked it

The compression ratio is so high on a diesel my guess is properly dead.

Take the glow plugs or injectors out and try cranking it again

Well IT RUNS! I am gob smacked. 3 out of 4 cylinders were soaked. I took the glow plugs out and cranked it over and shot all of the water out. All over the front of the newly painted house! Sooty water :-( this was with a towel over the engine too which shot off with the water

I am running it till warm, looks like the oil I waterless too but I will change it anyway along with removing the intake pipe work incase there is water trapped in the turbo still.

I think I will do the lottery for Saturday.

You might have slightly bent the rods so it could be down on performance as it wont be compressing the mixture as much. Take it for a drive and see what happens, you might get lucky

    Epic win.

I would part exchange it at a garage for something else however!

Leave it a week or two at least tho.

Salespeople are pretty dim, but it might seem a little suspicious if you rush in wanting to part-ex a car the day after all the flooding

This - as the New Mills site is on high flood alert I'm actually considering taking the 180 in tomorrow as the air intake is so much higher
Almost couldn't get the Clio home on Weds thanks to the retarded air intake

For the record I've forded stuff so deep in the S13 that water was spraying out of the gaps behind the pop-ups

You might want to run some cheap oil through it just to give it a flush and get any residual water out of the oil system.

I will do an oil change and see what comes out, I get oil free anyway so no bother there.

I'm not sure the performance can get much worse! It's not exactly rapid! Hopefully it's all fine.

Tim, I'm surprised you've net been told to stay home yet lol.

Wait for a dry spell and punt it on mate, amazed it's running with no immediate issues though.

It wont have got away scot free

Years ago I accidentally drove my Lancer into the sea. Did well not to lose it. Sold it on - to my brother.

Got to see it sail through MOTs year after year while I got stung for all sorts with whatever car I had..
