Home Media Server/streaming etc??
So for around 5 years since moving in my house I have used nothing but a HTPC with Media centre in my living room...
but a number of niggling issues and blu ray problems are quickly starting me thinking about changing the way I do things.
I only use the Laptop for browsing, the HTPC is used for downloading media and recording TV etc.
I am thinking about getting a freesat HD recorder/box to cover the day-day TV, A decent sony or similar BD player and I have a PS3.
Thing is I dont like the interface with the PS3 to stream TV etc, and the Onkyo amp ist brilliant to stream music.
Is there a way I can use the laptop to control what is coming out the amp/tv using a media centre style interface? as in a remote box that plugs in HDMI and I control from a program?
I take it I can salvage the HDD's from my HTPC and make them into some kind of NAS drive?
Only ever used the HTPC as a PC but with 3 drives in to keep media on.
Components are:
Samsung 5 series 50" Plasma TV
Onkyo TX-Nr 600
Sony PS3
Laptop with Win7 Pro.
the main HTPC I use now:
Asus PK5 board
Intel core 2 Quad core
Arctic 700W PSU
Ati Radeon 6600HD card with 1Gb DDr5
Samsung BD drive
Samsung Spinpoint F1 1TB drives X2 (one for media, one as backup)
OCZ Agility 3 120Gb SSD (for windows)
4G Cruicial Ram
WinTv Nova freesat card
WinTv Nova freeview card
So how is it best to mix this lot up for a media centre style set up.
Also the constant low hum from the PC fans is getting old fast, and if I could find a use for the Logitech DiNovo Edge it would be a bonus as it cost a fortune

I've got to be honest, I'm a little confused by what you want to achieve.
At the moment you have a HTPC attached directly to the TV but you want to remove that and use your laptop like a remote control to stream TV?
Unless your TV has DLNA built into it, I'm not sure that's possible. The TV needs to get a feed from somewhere.
If you're going to buy a new Blu-Ray player, just make sure you get a half decent one. I bought mine nearly a year ago now and it comes with DLNA built into it so I can stream and has audio out so you could potentially run it through the Onkyo if you so desired.
The PS3 also has DLNA but you say you don't like the interface. It's a little long winded I agree, but it looks better visually than both the LG ones built into the systems.
Alternatives are, buy a Raspberry Pi and install RaspBMC. It makes no noise and has a much prettier interface AND has an Android or iFail app which will act as a full remote control. You can then just point it to a NAS box and job done.
Am I getting close?

IIRC Microsoft are working on something like this that may be released soon, its some sort of interface to home media systems/xbox stuff.

I can chip in with something that may help in respect of the freesat HD, if you get a Humax Foxsat HDR there is some software that allows it to act as a media server here,http://www.avforums.com/forums/frees...-part-2-a.html
works pretty well.
