What bullshit excuse did they wheel out this time, or do they not even bother anymore?

They sent me a letter telling me their reasons but not what it was going up to. Clearly putting up the tolls to employ people with some common sense would be a start....

It was 'continued maintenance and future crossing projects' or similar.

    Tossers.

I thought the crossing was meant to be toll free opnce it had been paid off some years ago? Interested why the tolls are still in force.

They were. Then they decided that the maintenance they should have been doing to it as part of the normal road funding network was going to cost too much money, so they outsourced the running of it to Le Crossing and allow a French company to syphon money off of British motorists for sticking a few underpaid workers into toll booths.

I go through every day to work and back. I don't mind paying a reasonable fee (£1.50) but it really gripes me having to pay £5 a day. Get rid of the staff. Open the barriers and have a congestion charge style payment system. I'm fed up of spending an hr trying to get over the bridge on my way home on a Friday!

It was paid off and a sizeable maintenance fund put aside in 2002. Up until 2002 it was run by the Dartford River Crossing ltd as a PFI. It was creaming in pure profit up until 2009 whilst being run by the French firm Le Crossing Company. Since 2009 its been run by Connect Plus, a British private consortium. This corresponded with the governments intention to flog it off.

Even with a dart tag I think it's still £1:75 for cars and £2:33for lorries.
I cross it both ways 3 times a week and the only thing I see I'm paying for is to sit in traffic usually behind a LHD vehicle that has to piss about trying to pay the operator!!!
Surely with the money it makes they could pay to put in a booth with a window on the other side???
